Bike Across America Route Advice
« on: November 21, 2013, 01:30:54 pm »
Hi all,

I am planning a coast to coast ride fundraiser for next year. We would like to begin in San Diego, go through the Denver area and then on to Kansas City, and end up around Annapolis or somewhere around there on the east coast.

I'd welcome input on possible routes, or the best ways to figure out mapping that out.

Thanks in advance,
Keith

This is an off-discussed topic. There is a wealth of information on this site about route planning. Type "route planning" (with the quotation marks included) in the box in the upper right corner of this page and hit "Search". Here are a few of the suggestions you will read about:

 - Use Google map directions.
 - Use Google map satellite view to see road conditions.
 - Use Google street views to see road conditions even closer.
 - Get bicycle maps from the state bicycle coordinators, which usually show shoulders and traffic and have recommended roads.
 - Get AADT (average annual daily traffic) information on the state DOT websites.
 - Check the ACA route network.
 - Check out the RAAM course.
 - Check web sites such as mapmyride for rides that others have done.
 - Search the journals over at crazyguyonabike for similar rides.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll come up with a great route.
