Southern Tier Jan-Feb 2014 - where to spend rest days?

I completed half the Southern Tier (Houston to Florida) in 2012  and am now planning to complete the other half (Houston to San Diego) in Jan-Feb. 2014.

I am working out my daily rides and I was wondering whether anyone could make suggestions about where to spend my rest days. I am planning 26 riding days and 2-3 rest days.

Any suggestions about scenic highlights, interesting places to visit, etc... would be highly welcome. My first Southern Tier experience was wonderful in every respect, except that sometimes I felt I was pushing too hard and didn't take enough time to savor the experience.

Hi - I stayed a couple of days at De  Anza Springs Resort - outside Jacumba off Old Hwy 80 in fact you have to go under Junction 73 on I8 to get there.  Laid back friendly place - camp or cabin -, plenty of interesting walks in area.
One bonus is that you can get all your clothes washed at once 'cos it's a clothes optional resort (not a swingers place)  Check out the pics on Google Earth - don't bother if you expect to see naked people.

I thought the Gila Cliff Dwellings north of Silver City, NM, were interesting plus there's hot springs in the town.

Yes def agree on this, I enjoyed  Silver City and was there for the Tour of the Gila and even entered the Citizens Race coming second from last but with Lance A coming second in the main event I'm claiming a victory over him as I was clean.

You are welcome to rest up at Nancy's Cycling Camp mentioned on your ACA map 4 miles out of Palo Verde
California on Highway 78. We are in an unusual desert remote location with the benefit of the Colorado River
wetlands.
Our place is a good jump into the 78 mile desert crossing through Glamis Sand Dunes (not a town) to Brawley.
There are a chain of hosts in this region.

I host many cyclists and some stay on to rest up a few days. We have much to enjoy in the quiet emptiness,
 far from anything trendy. Cibola Wildlife Refuge is near. Just behind the camp is open mountains and canyons to hike and enjoy.
