Pacific Coast Route Section #5 - Winter 2014
« on: February 19, 2014, 10:21:26 am »
We recently received this report from a local cyclist in southern California. This information pertains to map panel 56:

I took a drive yesterday north of Ventura, CA specifically to check out some new Caltrans construction areas along SR-101 (aka U.S. 101) which we knew would affect cyclists along the Pacific Coast Route.

The construction area is about 10 miles south of Santa Barbara and begins (on its north end) at the Santa Barbara - Ventura County line (which is Bates Road) and extends south easterly for about 5-6 miles (i.e along south bound SR-101) to Seacliff Drive.

The former south bound bike lane, which were actually located on the SR-101 roadway between those two points, currently is closed due to construction. The north bound bike lane between those two points has been somewhat rerouted but remains open behind K-rail construction barriers.

At Bates Road (i.e. the county line) exit at Bates Road and turn left, proceed under the SR 101 bridges and link up with the north bound bike path. Travel south bound on the north bound path until it rejoins the existing bike facilities about 5-6 miles south at Seacliff Drive.

Riders should be made aware that they will be counter flowing against traffic (but behind a K-rail barrier), and that they will also be facing oncoming cyclists heading north bound along this temporary path.
