DeCycles is an excellent, affordable, youth cycling program for teens age 13-20. The history of deCycles dates back to 1968 with over 1800 riders pedaling five million rider miles. The cyclists ride in groups of six on roads chosen for the best combination of riding surface, safety, facilities, and scenery. Several motorized sag vehicles monitor and support the entire group of riders throughout the day. Rest stops with food, juice, and water are planned every 25-30 miles. A cargo truck transports all luggage, equipment, and supplies.
DeCycles 2014 trip begins June 21 in Key West, Florida the southern-most city of the United States. You will spend your first full day exploring this tropical resort town way out at sea. Then on Day 1, you will travel the Seven Mile Bridge with the Gulf of Mexico on your left and the Atlantic Ocean on your right. Nowhere in the world can you pedal a bicycle in the middle of an ocean. They even have dolphin crossings! The entire first half of the trip will tightly follow the Atlantic coastline and super flat terrain going through Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Cape Canaveral. DeCycles will visit the Kennedy Space Center and spend a day at Disney World. The cyclists will then head up to Daytona Beach, St. Augustine (the oldest city in America), Jacksonville, Savannah, and enjoy an anticipated overnight stay on the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in Charleston. At this point, deCycles will pull away from the coast and head for the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg, and Sevierville, TN. This area can be even more fun than Disney World. Finally, deCycles will pedal through the gorgeous horse farms in Lexington, Frankfort, the KY capitol, and Louisville and on to the final destination of Bloomington, IN on July 13th. This trip is loaded with exciting scenery, great biking roads, and lots of off-bike fun.
