Northern Tier - bike shops in Bangor or Bar Harbor
« on: February 12, 2014, 12:11:19 pm »
I am planning an East-to-West Northern Tier ride, beginning in late May. I want to ship my bicycle and some gear to the starting point. Can anyone recommend (or caution against) bike shops in Bangor or Bar Harbor that could receive and assemble my bike for me?

thanks,
-michael

There's only one bike shop listed on the map in Bar Harbor, and I suspect they have lots of experience with Northern Tier riders shipping bikes to them or from their store. If you pay them to put your bike together they are usually happy to have your bike shipped there.

I used the Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop (http://www.barharborbike.com/) to ship my bicycle home after finishing my Northern Tier in 2012. They were very professional and very competent, although a bit slow. It took a full month for my bike to arrive home. I fact, my bike sat around in their basement so long that they had to contact me to make sure which bike was mine.

I  had a poor experience with the Bar Harbor Bike Shop and do not recommend them.

The only one listed on the map is Cadillac Mountain Sports. I think the Bar Harbor Bike Shop is closed.

Bike "shops"in Bar Harbor are really mainly just rental outfits -that's where they make their money an put their effort. That being said, May should be a quiet time of year for them so they may have time to focus on you. If you can work on your bike yourself, I'd ship it to a hotel care of yourself and ask them to hold it until you arrive.
