I want to be able to scroll down from route to route in consecutively. In other words, how do I set the route up in my direction of travel?
Congratulations. You made it.

Order of routes is according to their names, alphabetically. Change the name. You can do that in the properties window. In the screen capture, you have a window open on the top right, labelled A02240. There is a field at the top of that window with the route name. Change it to 01 or whatever you like to indicate your order preference.

Voilà.

Thanks much.. However, I have another issue. Not sure why the route isn't being displayed as it is in basecamp here... waypoint J0C6W0 US 522 turn (Pass SR 22)

It also didn't display the campsite on the gps. Working in global map in Basecamp, can you explain why the City Navigator map doesn't view in basecamp anymore? Is it because of the recalculating?

The two screens are showing two different map sets: BaseCamp is showing the "Global Map" while the eTrex is showing City Navigator. They do not match.

Switch BaseCamp to show City Navigator. It should then match the eTrex.

Ok so I've been up several hours trying to get this to work. Using the forums for my help in addition to you all. I uploaded the routes and waypoints to my device via Basecamp. It looks like it's showing some campgrounds now. Before I exported the list I created named (East to West). The waypoints weren't displaying correctly at the time but some are still there. I'm trying to figure out what's this about, possible waypoint capacity? The route on the gps displays the campsites and other intrest that match Basecamp. However, the roads are still aren't identical. This may not be a fair image of the GPS because it's zoomed in all the way to the road because I wanted to display the mat structure.

Also in terms of naming the routes in the order I prefer, would it effect the code in the GPX file as it would be named different. Do you all customize the route names? I'm also writing notes in my pad as a Key a navigation.

No. No impact on the GPX file content or its performance. This is just a label to the file. You should be able to use it as is.

The route on the gps displays the campsites and other intrest that match Basecamp. However, the roads are still aren't identical.
Something is definitely not right. The eTrex is showing straight lines compared with curved ones following the road on BaseCamp.

My recommendation is split the effort of creating the route from the waypoints for campgrounds & other services.

I will focus the discussion below on getting you ready with the routes. Once we have those ready and transferred to your eTrex, we shall proceed to getting you the waypoints as well. You can place multiple .gpx files in your device. It will process them as one. You do not have to combine all data in one file.

To make sure we are starting cleanly on your device, please remove all files in the GPX directory:
  • Connect the eTrex to your computer via the USB cable
  • Two new storage devices should appear: one for the eTrex and the other for the micro SD card
  • Navigate to /garmin/gpx folder in both storage devices
  • Make a backup copy of all files in that directory
  • Remove all files from that directory
  • As I believe you are using a Mac, you need to empty trash to make sure these files are removed from the devices
We shall start with Section 12 of TransAmerica. Manipulate it per earlier discussion and as describe in the video.

What is the result? Did it work for you?

When done, highlight the route as you finished it, select File from the menu, select Export <route name>, and save a copy on your computer. Post a copy of that file somewhere (such as Dropbox) where I can download and review it.

Ok so I went through this process. I backed up my East to West list containing my route. I then created a test Route list and pulled in Section 12 there. This is what I got...

I went in and modified the route and recalculated it following the instruction in the video. The route still doesn't follow the roads on my GPS. Not sure whats going on. I've attached a zipped file of the route exported. I appreciate all your help with this. I'm getting closer and closer to my trip and can't believe I'm still struggling with this.

I assume you have the paper maps, correct? They should be your primary source for navigation. Meanwhile, we shall find a way to get you some GPS navigation that will help you.

The current GPX file formats you are downloading are indeed due for an upgrade. In fact, Adventure Cycling is rolling out improved digital navigation formats. They are being put to the test on the Northern Tier this year.

I've attached a zipped file of the route exported.
I found the following in the file you sent me:
  • It still contains waypoints. In the video instructions I posted earlier, the first step was to remove the waypoints. Otherwise, they will take memory from your device and confuse the route.
  • The route does follow roads, only not the intended ones. It spikes in and out of the main route. In the video I show how to move the route points slightly to match the intended route per the paper map.
  • This sample file is not for TransAmerica route. This is from Atlantic Coast route Section 4 near Suffolk, VA. The video instructions to download and edit the TransAmerica, including reversing it to go east to west as will be your first leg of the tour.
Where there are unclear instructions or steps in the video that you need help with, post them here. Otherwise, the end product should be identical to the result file from the video.

The alternate option is to use these digital files almost as is, with little manipulation. They will remain as straight lines. You will not receive turn prompts. However, when you look at them on the device, you will remain fairly close to the line, giving you some assurance that you are on the right route.

Do you prefer to go with this easier option? Or do you want to give the routes another try?

Once we finish with the route, we will set you up with the campgrounds. They should be much easier to manage.

I'd like to continue working on the gps routes. I feel like I'm almost there. The route I sent did contain the waypoints in the file. My mistake on that, I was following you instruction video and worked the exact file you did in the video, the Atlantic coast routes... I deleted the waypoints using text edit, saved then exported. It still didnt follow the roads. I'm go to give it another shot tonight when I get in and will post results. Ialso notice city navigator is a bit slugish in my basecamp and gps. Is that normal.

That is what I was hoping to hear. It is a bit tough learning curve at the beginning. But the final product is beautiful and will be tremendous help once you are out there on the road.

I'm go to give it another shot tonight when I get in and will post results.
Please try to use the TA exactly as shown in the video. The final product should match exactly the sample file I posted for you. Then it is just a matter of repeating the steps for the remaining sections.

I am not sure. I suppose this may be because the maps are on the SD card, therefore, there is some data transfer lag.

"I also notice city navigator is a bit slugish in my basecamp and gps. Is that normal.

When running Basecamp with the gps unit attached with the usb cable, there will be lag as the data has to be read through the cable. It's my belief that the etrex models run at the USB 1.0 specification speed and are a little sluggish naturally. I know of one way around this when working with Basecamp on your Mac computer.

Attach your gps unit to the computer with the USB cable and you should see the Garmin unit and the City Navigator SD card mount in the finder. My City Navigator mounts with the name 11-01318-52. Yours might have a different name as this probably depends on the map version you have. Start "Disk Utility" application which is included with all Macs. You will see the City Navigator SD card in the list of  mounted disks in the sidebar of this program. Create a disk image of your SD card by going File>New>Disk Image from 11-01318-52 under the menus. This will create a file on your hard drive that has the same content as your SD card.

Now when you want to work in Basecamp with the maps, rather than use it with the gps system hooked to the computer, first go to "Disk Utility" and select the disk image you created in the sidebar then click on open. This will load the file in your memory of your computer as if the gps was attached. When you start Basecamp it will see the maps through the mounted disk image. However, it will be much faster as the data is in memory and not being read through a USB cable.

I hope I have explained that well enough, I am really not the best computer techy guy out there.

Ok so I modified section 12 of the Atlantic Coast just as you displayed in the video. I duplicated, manipulated the route and code, then exported it to my GPS. This is what I got...

Zoomed out

Zoomed in

It's not showing the road correctly on my GPS still. I'm wondering if this is a City Navigator issue.

So the entire time I've been struggling with this map However, the acquiring satellite window just popped up. Now my desk is right next to my window in my office but I decided to go outside. Waa laa...

Looks like I i had to let it acquire the satellite and the route wrapped right on the road. Again I followed all the steps you took in the video. Is this correct? If so I can manipulate my other routes the same way. Afterwards I'd have to setup the waypoints for them.

Post a copy of the GPX file you generated please. I am seeing many waypoints on the picture of your device—not sure why they are there. They are not in the BaseCamp screen capture. Let me take a look. They may be residual on other files that you have to clean up.
