Weather question - Southern Tier - Phoenix to San Diego
« on: May 27, 2014, 09:16:20 am »
I am thinking of doing Southern Tier Phoenix to San Diego beginning December. Any comments about weather and direction of winds at that time. Plan, half camping, half motels. Thanks in advance.

I just finished the Southern Tier, March 3 to April 8. We had a few days of 80 degrees and on two occasions had ice on our tents in the morning. The wind was in our face more often than at our backs. It's a great ride, enjoy.

We started in San Diego  expecting the wind to be at our back but it didn't happen.

Yea, those mythological "prevailing westerlies" cannot be counted on. But the concept is so ingrained that almost everybody believes they exist, despite the evidence. Wind patterns vary by location and season, and are only a slight bias.

Doable.

The pass on I8 will be easier to do 'cause it likely won't be too hot.  Once you get on top you can push through to Alpine even if there is a little snow on the ground.

Cyclesafe,

Thanks - I was going to do some camping and some motels. Do you think it will be to cold at night to camp? Should I just plan on making this a motel trip?
