Cassette 11x32,34,36? With 50x34 crankset

Hello.   I'm planning Boulder Co to seaside via  Missoula starting June 15.

I have a charge filter hi 2012 cross bike that I have used for weekend self support trips.   It has 11x28 and standard compact crankset 50x34.   

Reading through past forum post fear and uncertainty have me in their relentless and expensive grips now.  From what I gather in this forum I need at least an 11 by 32.   @ my LBS I was offered a mtn cassette anywhere 11x32,34,36.    Thoughts?

FYI : On my past trips with bike set as it is I did a loop in North Colorado Rockies.   Stagecoach sp  to Gore pass (35miles) to top of Rabbit Ears Pass (30 miles) from South heading north on hwy 40 then 25 back to Stagecoach.    Personally the descent from Rabbit Ears was more taxing than ascending (as im not sure my verdict on 160mm mechanical disc brakes)

Rabbit Ears Pass from the south is a long but not particularly difficult climb. But if you've done it comfortably while fully loaded with the gearing you have, then you're probably good to go. Note however, that you will encounter significantly steeper stuff than what you see on Rabbit Ears Pass, although the climbs won't be as long. Luckily, Boulder to Seaside doesn't pass through the Appalachians or Ozarks or Green Mountains, but there will still be some steep climbs going up the Oregon coast and elsewhere.

Try riding up Sunshine Canyon and Lee Hill Road full loaded. If you're still okay, then I'd say you're fine. I would have also normally suggested you ride up Flagstaff (to the top, not just to the amphitheater), but I don't think Flagstaff is okay for cycling right now.

What gearing you need is a function of many factors, including your age and fitness level, and the weight of your load. Personally, I wouldn't ride with your gearing, but I'm not you.

There is probably more to it than just changing the cassette.  If you have a road rear derailleur, most won't handle a 32T large cog and certainly not a 34 or 36T.  You will most likely need a MTB rear derailleur and also a longer chain.

Flagstaff if open and mostly in good condition.  There is a stoplight down low controlling one way traffic where half the road is gone.  It is expected to be closed to all traffic M-F 8:30-3:30 starting sometime in June for ~5 months while repairs are made.

Thanks for all this input.   I have flagstaff as a possible training ride  in next few weeks.     

@daveb   yes,  I  am aware of other components that will be replaced.   

@John Nelson  thanks for the route feedback.   While I know there are many variables to consider I'm glad you could speak to Rabbit Rara pass.    I'm most concerned about the pass heading west from Yellowstone.

Are you referring to the unnamed pass between Ennis and Virginia City? Yes, that's one of many, many tough climbs. But it's a great ride from there all the way down to Twin Bridges.

I rode the Pacific Coast route with a cyclocross bike and a 12x30 cassette.  Front and rear paniers. - 50 lbs total weight packed.  Gearing was fine with a need to rest on a few hills.  Have fun...
