I see a lot of rear racks out there - Tubus EVO cargo, OMM Nomad and Sherpa ... - but haven't really gotten any confirmation as to whether or not those racks, or any other, will fit a Surly Ogre 29er with disc brakes. The disc brakes seem to be the real trouble maker when it comes to finding a rack that will fit!

Thanks much for any input.

Trial and error.

Call Wayne at the touringstore.com and if he likes you he will let you buy several racks and return the ones that don't fit.  Also, Jandd sells an adapter that can make any rack fit.

I'm sure Surly themselves would have recommendations.  Their web site description of the Ogre says; "Both fork and frame allow the use of a fender, disc brake, and rack at the same time.", so there must be suitable racks.  Contact them directly.

I have the Ogre's little brother, the Troll which has the same dropouts. I have an Axiom journey adjustable on it and didnt have to do anything weird to make it work. I have also seen a Troll with a Tubus Logo on it. I dont know if the owner had to do any fiddling to make it work out. OMM also makes racks that will work. I would actually figure out which racks you are interested and then do a search to see if anyone put them on an Ogre or Troll and if there were issues. I think most things will work without much difficulty because of the disc brake placement on the inside.

Thanks for the input. Looks like the Tubus Logo Classic 29er is the problem solver.

I've been real happy with my Tubus Cosmo on my Ogre.  No overnights on the bike yet, but it has worked real well for commuting and shopping so far.

I'm very pleased with a Tubus Cargo Evo +2 (29er version) on my Ogre.  It's light weight, offers a relatively large top area, and is extremely sturdy.  The Logo offers a lower pannier mounting rail, but is heavier and has a smaller top area.

I have a couple of OMM Sherpa racks on other bikes -- They would work well on the Ogre also, but are overbuilt for my purposes on the Ogre.

I'm happy with the Blackburn Outpost racks. Extremely light and tough, and are meant to go on bikes with disc brakes. The one caveat is that I would highly recommend getting them installed at a bike shop, as it will need to be cut down to fit the bike.

I would second the recommendation of the Blackburn Outpost rear rack although, I believe my above post suggests what I believe is a better option.  I have an Outpost on another bike.  The Outpost is designed to be mounted on either the axle, or on a drop-out rack mount point.  The top attachment can be made on either the seat stays (with braze-on fitting, or clamp), or cantilever posts.  The rack is highly adjustable and is easily mounted by the user.  I don't understand the OP's comment that it needs to be cut-down.  Two screws allow the height to be adjusted roughly 2".  Note: although marketing pics show the Outpost rack as black in color, it is in fact only offered in Champagne.
