There is a Dollar General store along HWY 20 in Tornillo, TX and a small family owned store in Fort Hancock, TX on Hwy 148.

Stopped at both locations on a Monday in early March while touring. The store in Fort Hancock sold usual convenience store items, tacos and had a good supply of fresh fruits including bananas. Also had a picnic table or two out front. That store on HWY 148 was maybe a mile from Hwy 20, closer to IH 10.

After that not really anything until Sierra Blanca, except cows, farmland, border patrol vehicles, a picnic area on IH 10, checkpoint and hills  ;)

Hello, I'm out of El Paso, and those places are still there. That unusual owner run, one of a kind convenience store is worth the stop.
I'm curious, did you cycle from there up to IH-10 and then along the freeway to Sierra Blanca?  Or did you go down 148 back to Hwy 20?
Thanks for posting those two stops.  I'll hit them on my run that way.

Wow, old post....

Anyway here is my journal. The maps with my route are in the journal. I did not have a garmin or similar for the ride.

Still one of my favorite tours.

Terrific journal, Richard.  Thanks for posting on crazyguy, I"m enjoying the read.  Tho I live in ole El Paso now, I lived in San Antonio for years and my family was in El Paso.  I now own property in San Antonio, still.  So I have made "the crossing" a hundred times but never on bike so you journal is fascinating to me. I'm dreaming up some of that route with my TREK 7200 & trailer.  I'll be thinking of you on my next "crossing" as well, as I'll make a pit stop in honor of youse threes stopping at the old convenience store in Fort Hancock, there since before convenience stores became a national phenomena.  I will post here again as I complete your journal of El Paso to San Antonio.

Glad you enjoyed the journal...so far my best tour overall. I have done some smaller ones of a few days, plus RAGBRAI in 2015, which was actually pretty awesome.

Safe travels and let me know when you plan to hit the road. I might just show up somewhere, LOL
