Bicycle Route 66 Section 4 Panel 62 - Spring 2015

WB:  On I-25 when you are just north of Exit 294 the shoulder will become very narrow and orange construction barrels will be blocking the little that remains.  You initially have a narrow shoulder and then you have essentially zero shoulder for roughly 1/4 mile.  This is on a climbing curve.  There isn’t another route unless you take I-40 all the way to Clines Corners, so wait for a break in traffic and then peddle like mad until you reach the exit which is just around the curve.

EB:  Might not be any better.  Unsure.

I was in my car and not on my bike so the distance is approximate.

I just rode eastbound through the construction area this morning. I was able to access the onramp from Old Las Vegas Hwy. The entire 294 east and west on and off ramps are nothing but dirt but it is rideable. The site superintendent directed me from the eastbound onramp onto the shoulder of I-25. You then have no choice but to move into the smallest of areas between the single traffic lane and the temporary K rail. Scott is correct in that you have a very brief flat area to accelerate then you hit an incline. Your exposure to traffic is about 100 yards before you can move onto the full shoulder.

Traffic was light but I did wait until I had a little gap then it was full throttle until I cleared the K rail. As an FYI on this section of I-25, if you could call any interstate riding beautiful, this is it. The climb was nice, the shoulder was clean and wide, the views were great, and the traffic was light.

Safe travels all!
