Custis Trail into Washington
« on: October 06, 2014, 10:19:02 am »
Hi flying in from UK and needing to get from Washington Dulles Airport into Washington DC and planned to use the WOD trail and pick up the Custis Trail.
When I Google Custis Trail the only thing that comes up is all about the crime committed on the trail.  Can someone give me the low down on using this trail please.
Thanks
Tony

Tony,

I found this archived forum thread from an Washington (DC) area group that might be helpful. They mention the Custis Trail.

Tony - your plan to use the W&OD to the Custis is just fine. That is a heavily trafficked route, especially on weekends and is frequented by bike commuters during the week. It winds through suburban neighborhoods and does not have a particular crime problem. I ride it regularly. You'll be just fine.

We rode both those trails as part of an overnight loop including the C&O to Whites Ferry. We were on a loaded tandem pulling a child trailer and it was fine.

Ditto. I had lead youth groups on this trail scores of times and have never felt any threat to my security. It's a safe, heavily trafficked, suburban trail.
