Schwalbe Mondial vs Marathon Plus Tour
« on: November 08, 2014, 11:40:47 pm »
I'm looking to pick up a pair of 26x2.0 rugged tires for both on and off-pavement rides. I came across these two Schwalbe tires, but I've no personal experience with either tire. I have had the regular Marathon Plus before, which while very heavy, performed extremely well and experienced no flats.

So anyone know how these compare? Will the MPT be more flat resistent than the Mondial? I would say priorities are:

1- Flat protection
2- Dirt/gravel performance
3- Wear

By the way, this is going on my Big Dummy. I would assume both of these tires are well-suited to carrying a (what I consider) big load. Probably 50-100 lbs. Thanks for any input.

By rating each of their tires in a dozen different categories, Schwalbe makes it easy to do this kind of comparison their web site (assuming you trust Schwalbe's evaluation of their own tires, and I don't know why you wouldn't, or at least I don't know why you would trust anybody else's evaluation more).

Since you didn't even list rolling resistance as a priority, the weight difference is immaterial. You also didn't mention ride quality. Many people say that riding heavy, stiff tires is like riding on wood wheels and sucks all the joy out of riding. Who cares if you can go a million miles on one set of tires without a flat if there is no joy in it. How much are you willing to sacrifice to get a flat every two years vs. a flat every one year? Flats are  certainly annoying, but not that hard to fix.

It's also important to note that the Mondial comes in both a folding version and a wire bead version, and they are completely different tires. Almost everything about these two tires is different except the color and the tread pattern, which makes it very odd that Schwalbe only gives one set of ratings. Since there's a 2-to-1 difference in price, would you really expect them to perform the same? I don't think so.

For protection, the Plus Tour gets a 6 and the Mondial gets a 5. Score one for the Plus Tour. For off road, the Plus Tour gets a 3 and the Mondial gets a 4. Score one for the Mondial. For durability, they both get a 6. I would think, however, that the Plus Tour would last darn near forever since the rubber is about 6 inches thick  ;).

It's almost a tie between these two. You might want to look at some of the other criteria that Schwalbe rates.

Thank you, John. I didn't notice the 6 square rating. Thought they were all based on a 5-square system, since I didn't see any blank squares.

Pricing wise, they're both priced the same on Chainreaction. Also, I've changed my fair share of tubes. Actually, 2 flats at 3am on last weekend's ride. :) The main reason for the flat protection is because I occasionally haul my kids on my Big Dummy and would not want to experience a flat riding at speed with those two in the back.

Looks like MPT is my tire. Thanks again!!

I've been riding the Mondial for 2 months across Montana and Yellowstone and part of Wyoming . I've gotten 2 flats in 800 miles. The first was a broken fish hook. The second was some brown glass. Both were wedges really deep before a puncture. The Mondial 700x40c is great on gravel and even really bad montana gravel roads. I've been riding some really steep (45 degree or some crazy degree) hills in Oregon and had little to no slip in wet and loose gravel. I was very impressed with these tires. I got the cheaper ones too. Hope this helps.

I am using Marathons front and rear.Only one small puncture in 1200-1400 miles of highway cycling, which, if you have ever cycled long distances on cheap tires, is quite impressive.

We just replaced our Mondials before leaving Europe for Southeast Asia.

18 months and nearly 10,000 miles on all types of terrain and only two flats.

Thanks again for the replies. I ended up ordering the MPT last week from Wiggle. If they don't work out, I'll be ordering up the Mondials.

I've been struggling to find 26x2.0 Mondials (Folding). If anyone knows anyone who might have four in stock, I'd appreciate the tip!

I got mine at Bike Touring News but they seem to be out of stock at the moment. They are in ID so the shipping is quick.

I contacted Schwalbe USA and they said they're waiting on a shipment that's due to arrive 12/22, so maybe I can at least order them for Christmas!

I believe they are still located up in Ferndale, WA just outside Bellingham. They were very responsive when I had a defective tire last year.

Wow, quick shipping from Wiggle. Got them today and mounted up. They are HEFTY tires. 1.14kg. But so beefy. It is like going from passenger tires to all terrain truck tires. I feel like I can run over anything. :) test ride around the neighborhood and rolls better than expected. With the lugs, I thought they'd be louder, but surprisingly quiet. Can't wait to get them out on dirt.

Also, mounting was super easy.  I was a bit concerned that they went on so easily (required no tire lever).  But my rims have a pretty deep center channel, which helped quite a bit.

A bit heavy, yes. But we HAVE ridden over just about everything with no flats or other troubles!

Enjoy,
