Cycling Around the World, but.........
« on: March 01, 2015, 03:26:05 am »
Hi, at 52 I am planning to cycle around the world, hopefully starting later on this year when I have bought a smaller house to free up the
funds.

I have set up a website detailing my adventure, and myself, and I looking for advice and tips. Has anyone crossed the USA and Canada the way I am planning here below, and if so, anything I should be aware of as a solo cyclist. Bears, wolves, visas, or whatever.

Thanks
Steve

My first leg will be across the USA:

UK

Flying to

USA

New York (Niagara Falls) - Pennsylvania - Ohio - Indiana (The 100th Indianapolis 500) - Illinois - Iowa - South Dakota (Mount Rushmore) - Wyoming (Yellowstone Park) - Montana

Cycling to

Canada

Alberta - British Columbia

Cycling to

USA

Alaska (Grizzly Bears)

Ferry from Ryder Alaska to

Canada

Vancouver Island (Killer Whales)

Cycling to

USA

Washington - Oregon - California

Total Cycling Miles - Min 6000

Having heard stories from a friend who used to attend in the infield, I'd be most concerned about the wildlife at the Indy 500.  ;)

Our advice is to be flexible and take it day by day. Your route and your plans will change as you roll down the road, at least this has been our experience, so be prepared for that. Next week marks 2 years on the road and it has been an amazing journey. Currently cycling across the great southwest of America back to our home in Florida. Good luck and have fun. Will we ever do it again... Heck yeah without a doubt.... but first we need to earn more freedom credits. ;-)

Sounds like your having a great time. So where have you been in this 2 years. Out of all the states I have been in the US, Florida is by far my favorite.

Ah, I have just noticed you have a website and I am viewing that. I didn't realize our web addresses appeared where they do. Thanks and great site you have.

I'd go to the Ontario side of Niagara Falls. Much more interesting than the NY side. You can cross the border not to far from the Erie Canal path trail head in Lockhaven, NY. The Rainbow Hostel is a neat place to stay. It's not in the heavily touristed part of town, but close enough to it to be convenient. You can then cross the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, NY to continue west.

Have you looked at ACA's routes? The Northern Tier route will cover a good deal of what you want to do in the east and Midwest to Iowa. Other routes include Yellowstone, MT, AB and B.C. The Pacific Coast is also covered.

I did think about the Canada side first, but then wondered about visa's going into Canada, back out of Canada, and in and out 2 more times. I will have to look into that. I will look at those routes too. I have driven the Pacific Coast, and would love to go through Yellowstone. So many options at this stage, pretty exciting stuff, thanks.

Hi Stephen,
I also plan to cycle around the world, but won't be starting until 2018.  I figure I will be doing about half of the trip on land and half by air.  Some of the major differences between my planned trip and yours, is not only that it will start 3 years from now, but I plan to use an electric bike and if I can get others to join me (a group tour of the world) that would be even better.

Sounds great. Maybe in 3 years the electric bike technology will have improved to make you trip even more enjoyable, or at least the bikes maybe more reliable. I suppose that's it really, is how reliable those things are and what would happen if there was a problem with them. That said, they all still have pedals so no excuses hey.

The amount of flying in an around the world cycle is quite a bit really, as other than hitching a lift on a cargo ship or pumping the tyres up to the size of bouncy castles to float across the seas, there really isn't much of an option. We aren't Pangea anymore. You will have to let me know how you get on with your trip.

According to the info given above how, I would like to know, does cycling across the US and/or parts of Canada and the west coast constitute cycling around the world - unless, I guess, your 'world' consists of just those two specific countries.  Or is there more to come?

Hi sanuk,

I believe the 6000 miles through Canada and the U.S. is the first leg of Stephen's journey.  Mine starts in Southern California and then South into Mexico, Central and South American, with a flight to Europe, through Europe and a flight to Australia, through Australia and finally another flight to Southern California.  My trip could change though as I do not start until 2018.

Hi Sanuk, as you will be rightly thinking, and as ancientcyclist has pointed out too, there is indeed more to come. This is only my first leg, from there I will cycle down the West coast of the US, Mexico, Central America, down to Chile, over to New Zealand, Australia and as you can imagine, quite a few more countries before I get back home to the UK.
