 Coops is living in NZ now I think but is a font of knowledge about bush cycling in Oz.

The Great Northern Highway would be a boring ride (it's a boring drive) with long diversions need to see anything if interest. There are long stretches of up to 400kms without any services at all so you need to have water carrying capacity. And temperatures are extreme in summer.
