Albany to Northern Tier
« on: May 25, 2015, 07:48:34 pm »
Hi,

I'm planning routes for the early part of my cross-country trek.  Looking for insights on my options to connect to the Northern Tier route from Albany.  I have two possibilities so far:

Albany, NY to Pulaski, NY via Revolutionary Trail.  Pulaski, NY to Buffalo, NY via Northern Tier.

or

Albany, NY to Buffalo, NY via Erie Canalway Trial.

My main interest is which route is likely to be the most enjoyable/scenic.  If you've been on either trail, I'd be curious to hear any opinions.  I plan on camping as much as possible (rustic sites where available, stealth camping otherwise).

I'm open to any other suggestions for this leg of my journey.  Thanks in advance for your help!

If you take the latter, I recommend staying on the route proper and going into Niagara Falls, ON and then to Buffalo. The Rainbow Hostel in the old part of Niagara Falls was decent.

I don't recall any rustic camping between Lockport and a bit east of Rochester. We stayed in the dorms at SUNY Brockport the one night we stayed along the trail before heading north to Lake Ontario.

For camping, I recomend the Niagara County Camping Resort, it is just north east of Lockport.  They have a very nice discount for bicyclists.  Please note the onramp to the Lewiston Queenston bridge listed in the Northern Tier Map is currently closed.  Please see below

I second crossing into Canada, and by using the Rainbow bridge, you will still see the Niagara Falls from the Canadian side.

In a couple of hours I will be heading  along the listed detour for a 2-3 day loop of the Niagara Peninsula.
