Best places on TransAm to send postcards from
« on: June 10, 2015, 10:01:40 pm »
I'm nearing Illinois now on a E-W TransAm trip via the Western Express.

I'd like to send postcards to a bunch of people. The problem is, the little out-of-the-way towns I like to get my postmarks from seldom have interesting postcards for sale. They're out of the way, so no one visits, hence no need for postcards.

I know there are exceptions. For those who have done the TransAm, where do you think a good place to send postcards from would be? Thanks!

I'm sure you'll find good Popeye postcards in Chester. Find some Lewis and Clark postcards in Cave-in-Rock. NPS probably sells postcards at Alley Spring. If you stop in Hutchinson, get a Cosmosphere postcard. Get some Santa Fe Trail postcards just past Larned at the visitors center.

Further west, you'll be in the neighborhood for some good postcards at Canon City (Royal Gorge, take a day to see it by train or raft), Breckenridge (Rocky Mtns.), Jackson (Tetons), and of course Yellowstone.  Grab a few red rocks postcards at Lander; the rocks are spectacular, but you won't see them until the next day on the way to Dubois, and for some reason there were none to be found in Dubois.

Twin Bridges, Jackson and Wisdom, MT are small places that might have them. Dillon, MT surely will. There is at least one gift shop or something similar in Twin Bridges. Since I just know you will spend a night at the Bike Camp there :) you might as well explore the town. There ain't much in Jackson except a lodge/campground that has a hot springs pool, a bar and a restaurant, and a café across the street, but I think I remember some post cards at the front desk when I was there last year. Check the grocery store in Wisdom. Maybe 10 miles or so west of Wisdom you will pass the historic battlefield site. Might be a gift shop there. Maybe the Country Store/campground on your right in Sula as you are descending from Lost Trail Pass. IIRC, just before you get there you will pass the local post office.

Oh. Western-themed Virginia City, MT will certainly have them, and you will need a rest after the tough climb out of Ennis. ;)

From his mention of the Western Express, I inferred he wasn't going through Canon City, Royal Gorge, Breckenridge, Jackson, Yellowstone, Lander, Dubois, Twin Bridges, Wisdom, Dillon, Sula, Virginia City, nor Ennis.

Thanks guys! Yes, I'll miss all those places after Pueblo by hitting the Western Express.

I got a bunch of cards in Cave-In-Rock, but they weren't all that exciting. I'm in Chester now, and they're a little better!

I guess Hutchinson and Larned next?
