My First Cycling Tour From Michigan To Oregon!
« on: June 12, 2015, 11:47:14 am »
Hi there, my name is Jamie. I'm currently about to embark on a bike trip from Jackson Michigan to Portland Oregon. I was just wondering if anyone had any route suggestions or which adventure cycling map would be the best to follow.

I'd probably be looking at the Northern Tier to the Lewis and Clark Trail. You can see the different routes in the Adventure Cycling Route Network on the following map:

When I went that way I went to Ludington and took the fine ferry across Lake Michigan (Don't pass up the very nice municipal campground in Reed City).

I then crossed Wisconsin and picked up US14 and followed it all the way to Yellowstone with a lengthy scenic stay in the Rapid City area (Mt. Rushmore, Custer monument, Devil's Tower, Etc.). I crossed Idaho mostly on US20 and crossed eastern Oregon on US26. These are good bicycling roads with light to bearable traffic and plenty of shoulders. A lot of US26 in Oregon is almost traffic free. Don't miss McKenzie Pass. It's really beautiful.

Hey, I was just perusing the message boards and stumbled upon your note about biking through Oregon, Idaho, etc. ... I'm planning a West-to-East ride, trying to get to the RAGBRAI in time for the last week of July. ... Two questions: When you said you took 26 through Oregon, how long did you take to cover the state? And how did you connect from 20-to-26 -- from where to where did you make that connection?

I know this is an old topic, but it's relevant to my ride this summer. Thanks ...

I crossed Oregon from the Idaho border to Florence in about five leisurely (by my standards) days. US26 and US20 join at Vale OR a few miles from the Idaho border. To this day I recall riding US26 across western Oregon as one of the highlights of all my bicycle touring.

Have plenty of water capacity and a tolerance for chip seal. Cycle Oregon crossed the state in 2002--Nyssa to Florence, using U.S. 26 for part of the route. It was crispy critter hot a couple of days, and that was the second week of September. But it was a dry heat. :)
