Fairbanks to Deadhorse - worth riding twice?
« on: June 12, 2016, 08:33:38 am »
Hi all, new to the forum so hopefully I'm posting this in the right place and that I don't offend anyone. Heading to Alaska in a couple of weeks to start pedalling South  :D can't wait!

My question is Fairbanks to Deadhorse, aka the Dalton Highway, is as far as I'm aware a dead end road, so worth riding twice? Ie. From Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay then back again?

Hoping somebody here will have a worthwhile opinion on this. I seemed to be able to get to Fairbanks, from the UK, relatively cheaply but however which way I've looked the 500mi North from there is a good chunk extra. So do I pay up and fly/bus to Deadhorse or is it worth the extra probably weeks ride from Fairbanks only to turn around and ride back again?!

At the moment this is a tough decision as the bus/plane option would put me in Deadhorse for the evening of midsummer day to enjoy the scenery on a possibly slightly touristy bus or from the air, but I'll be missing a, hopefully amazing, extra week of cycling. On the flipside I'll be in Fairbanks on the morning of midsummer day anyway, so I suppose another question is whether there's much to stay do in Fairbanks and whether I'll be missing much in Deadhorse for not being there on June 21st

Hoping for some thoughtful advice, thanks in advance
