First I assume you are going from New York City, NY, to Norfolk, VA.  Can you provide more information as to your trip?    For instance, when are you planning this trip for, i.e. May, August, October?  Are you camping (outside of NYC).  How many days in NYC?  Do you eat out in cafes or cook your own food?

Hostels in NYC around $60/night.  Hotels a minimum of $150.  Hotels can go radically up depending on the time of year.  Food is about $30-$40+ a day for cafes.  Can be less if cooking.  Sightseeing can be free to expensive.   Provide more info and others can assist with costs.

Best wishes, John

Hello John
I'll intend to go on september. I intend to do my meals in caffe shops and I'll stay in NY only 2 days, because I already know. My idea is sleep in hostel or small road motels.

Hotels along that part of the east coast are going to be relatively expensive. $70/night and up, at least.

And a word of warning: The Pope is coming to Philadelphia on/around September 25th in connection with some huge "convention" (the meeting of world families or something like that) and will be hanging around for the weekend. (I believe he will be visiting New York earlier that week.) Up to 2 million visitors are expected, which is a lot considering that population of the city is only about 1.4 million. Don't count on finding a room in Philadelphia or anywhere in the area that week. When the Pope's visit was announced rooms started filling up as far away as Newark, Delaware. I live about 5 blocks from where he will be saying an outdoor mass on September 27th. We are planning to leave town that week and return the following Monday.

Labor Day is September 7 this year. It's a big holiday weekend. Expect high occupancy rates during the week leading up to the holiday.

Finally, how do you plan to get out of New York? It's not an easy place to ride your bike out of if you are heading west or south. You might want to look at taking some form of public transportation such as a ferry or train.

You might consider skipping New York City altogether.  It would save you some expensive meals and lodging.  If you don't already have a ticket, I'd choose an airport that allowed you to avoid NYC altogether unless seeing NYC important to you.

If you want to visit NYC and camp, there is a campground in Newark,  New Jersey just outside New York.
http://www.libertyharborrv.com
The park is essentially a parking lot for RVs but they have a small grass area by the showers where you can put up a tent. They charge $50 a night for a tent with up to 4 people. They are about a 5 minute walk away from the PATH train which runs every 15 minutes to the centre of Manhattan. It's not a great place to stay, but it is cheap and we'll located.

Wow!  Thanks for sharing that information.  I know exactly where the Grove St. PATH stop is. Every year our club does a ride from New Hope to Brooklyn. We come east on Montgomery and then make a left on Barrow, which is one block west of Grove. The area inland from the water has undergone an incredible transformation over the years. Riding north on Barrow we would see more and more building rehabs being performed every year. The place is also close to the light rail line. You can ride to the Hoboken train station/ferry terminal and take the ferry to several places NYC on weekdays, although you have to go to 14th St. for the ferry on the weekends. That's how our ride gets to Manhattan.

I have said to my GF more than once that an urban campground might fly in Philadelphia. Then I would say to myself "Not enough people would go for something like that." Perhaps I have been wrong all these years.

Yeah it's really well located, but keep in mind that you'll be camping on a 15 x 30 foot grass patch surrounded by brick buildings and asphalt. Still it's very convenient and the cheapest night available in NYC. Anyways, you don't go to New York to stay inside whether it be a tent or hotel.

Yeah. If you look at Trip Advisor there are some bad reviews. Many of those had reviews sound like they came from people who were expecting to be camped in the shadow of Devil's Tower or among the trees of some National Forest. Indeed, one reviewer complained about not being able to sit outside the RV in the evening like they were expecting to have a campfire and roast marshmallows. It's Jersey City, for the love of Pete! Another interesting review complained about having to walk 1.5 miles to the ferry. Yep. No golf carts to take you to the campground office for the evening ice cream social. My walk to work is farther than that each way. Two weeks from Saturday we will drop a car off in Brooklyn Heights, walk nearly 2 miles to Red Hook for lunch and then to the Ikea ferry dock for a ride to Manhattan. Got to love a city where Ikea has its own ferry service.
