Atlantic Coast Bicycle Route USA
« on: November 21, 2015, 09:52:02 am »
Hi, my name is Justin Rowe a serving UK Firefighter, ex Soldier and ultra endurance runner, I am not a cyclist but can anyone out there give me any top tips with the 2,535 mile Atlantic Coast Bicycle Route. I am planning to run the entire route during May 2019 pulling a bespoke trailer carrying all my kit, 25 miles a day for approx 101 days (Not including rest days) During the last 20 years I have ran the length, breadth of the UK & The 5 Boroughs of New York City, I will be supporting the Stephen Siller Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation USA (Building homes for injured veterans) If you have cycled the route or part of it, is it safe to run, is their camp sites or hotels on the route etc etc. Thank you for your assistance Justin

JustinR - Will be monitoring your progress via your posts from now allllll the way to your 2019 completion.
While I will be of little value with advice (have not personally ridden that ACA route) I wanted you to know that you certainly have a "fan"  :- ).
On the outside chance that you have not already gotten into your possession and already started studying the ACA maps ....
for speed, here is the link:
http://www.adventurecycling.org/cyclosource-store/route-maps/atlantic-coast-route/
... for well updated documentation of most all the various places to stay and re-provision, etc., etc.
After you purchase a map ACA provides an on-line update link so that whatever map revision date you have you can then download last minute updates just before you launch. Updates are sent in by cyclists who travel the routes and then are verified by ACA HQ.
Where topology variation is significant the ACA maps typically include elevation cutaways.
Meanwhile .... I have searched for your UK "Bespoken" brand trailer and found that there are many popular designs ... when you have a chance could you kindly post a link to the one it sounds as though you already plan and/or have already employed in your previous runs ? - Thank you.

Hi thank you for the reply, please find attached photo of my old trailer its very heavy but durable as designed to carry the kit of my team of 4 runners around the UK, at the moment I am in process of having a lightweight trailer built designed to carry 100 litres of kit with an aluminium body and can be assembled very quickly with a waterproof hood. Once its built I will send you the details, Yes I have just purchased all the maps from the site and I am in the early stage of training and planning the route. I have recently run to all of the 215 fire houses in New Yorks 5 Boroughs (364 miles in 7 days) With massive support from New Yorkers & FDNY, I
will keep you in the loop with my progress, Kind regards Justin

I just wanted to jump in here and let you know that I too will be following your progress.  I can't really help you with your request but as a brother Firefighter and a former U.S. Marine you have my support.  I ran the Stephen Siller run back in 2011, words cannot express the emotion I felt the day of that run.  My lieutenants uncle was killed on 9/11 in the second tower I believe, his name was Joseph Spor.  I was with my buddy's family and my brother firefighters that day, I haven't shed that many tears since I was a kid.  Thanks for what you have done and what you are going to do, it's motivating as h***!  Stay safe.

What extraordinary ambition, endurance and energy. The route is a good one. There will always be food and beverages. There is the east coast greenway.

"Bespoke" is not a brand of a trailer, it a Britishism for "custom." So he's having a custom trailer made.
