Rt 66 Section 6 Maps 91 - 95 Needles to Amboy
« on: February 08, 2016, 01:09:52 pm »
If I read the maps correctly, when they were published, a temporary route was put into play on Rt 40 heading west from Fenner, then south at exit 78 towards Amboy.  Is this temporary route using Rt 40 still allowed?

Can we ride Rt 40 between Needles and Fenner ?

Thanks, Jim

I do not know the answer to either of your questions, but I will say that I loved riding through the Mojave Desert, and there's no way I would want to do it on Interstate 40. The desert has a certain majestic beauty that cannot be appreciated from the interstate.

Thanks John, did you take the ACA Rt 66 or some other route through the Mojave ?

I stayed on the ACA route and spent nights in Amboy, Newberry Springs and Victorville. Read more at:

The most up to date information we have on the situation can be found on the addenda for Bicycle Route 66 Section 6:

Hey John,

I read your Post "Going West" on crazyguyonabike a few days ago and I am planning a trip in 2017 from Flagstaff, AZ to San Diego, CA via Route 66 and Pacific Coast Route and U got any Tip on Route 66?

Hey Tim, starting in Flagstaff will save you a lot of climbing. I recommend staying on the ACA Bicycle Route 66 all the way to the Santa Monica Pier, and then following the ACA Pacific Coast Route down to San Diego. Don't take Interstate 40 or 15 any more than you have too. You'll love Sitgreaves Pass and Oatman, and Amboy is not to be missed. Watch the movies "Cars" and "Bagdad Cafe" before you go. A very slight deviation in Los Angeles will take you to Hollywood and Vine. Plan some extra time in Seligman—it's a fun place.

I just drove that section of I40.  There are numerous signs on the freeway for Share the Road and signs that tell cyclists when to exit the freeway.  I have to assume that the Route 66 roadway hasn't been repaired if the signs are still up.
