Garmin Edge 1000 Explore

Finally took the plunge and replaced my Garmin Edge 205, my first generation SPOT Tracker and some of the functions of my smartphone with a Garmin Edge 1000 Explore. Looking forward to exploring with it on Discovery, my Bianchi Volpe, and maybe next year on my new Meriwether Cycles Discovery II.

I've used this on my Cogburn a couple of times this winter, and so far it works great. A bit different than the old 205, but I am getting used to that. Love the auto-load feature! Just set the unit next to my laptop or Dragon tablet and the ride appears on my Ride with GPS log. Really looking forward to using it on long rides this spring.

Looking at getting my first GPS, I have been using my iPhone to this point but hope this summer to take some longer rides after I retire in June.  I was pretty much sold on the idea of the Garmin Edge 1000 but now I am also looking at the Edge Explore 1000.  There doesn't appear to be much difference except it's missing the "training calendar" and the "Simano Di2 Integration", neither of which I can imagine me ever using. 

Can you give me some insight on why you bought the Explore, except for the obvious lower cost?

Primarily the "Incident (read: Crash) Detection", plus it does MTB trails.. I was leaning towards the Edge Touring, and couldn't justify the extra cost until I figured out what I paid each month to SPOT, what a new 3rd gen SPOT Tracker would have cost me (Mine was 1st generation), What the Edge Touring would have cost with buying a new SPOT was what convinced me to go ahead with the Edge 1000 Explore. If you don't need the Crash Detection feature, I would suggest going with the Edge Touring unit.

Also, my Meriwether will have a dynamo hub, so charging will not be an issue

Thanks Hans, good info.  I think I will probably purchase the Explore 1000 this summer, also pulled up the link at the bottom of your page.  As an ordained Episcopal minister (part time now, maybe full time when I retire from teaching this summer) I find it interesting.  When I have a few minutes I would love to talk with you about that ministry.

I just picked up an Edge Explore and currently playing around with Garmin's Basecamp and OSMs...  I've found a way to load more than one map onto my laptop (windows) but not a way to display more than one "region" at a time, but I'm still playing...   Found some missing "bike paths" not in OSM or garmin's basemap too..  And the interface is a little awkward IMO. However, some of that is just me not being familiar with it yet..

Is there a way to show more than one region at once? at least with the OSM updates anyway?

I do not believe there is a way to load more than one map onto Basecamp, at least when I looked at it a couple of years ago. This is mainly because the file name must be a specific, therefore cannot be duplicated.

What is your preference for using Basecamp versus some of the online mapping tools such as Ride with GPS, Strava, or Garmin Connect?

Aside from fast, responsive, & friendly user interface, Ride with GPS allows for choosing among many available maps: Google, OSM, OSM bicycle, OSM outdoor, satellite, topo, etc.

Strava, on the other hand, allows you to choose routes base on heat maps that show most popular & used routes.

I assume you use Live Tracking as well, in similar function to SPOT, that allows family & friends to track your location.
