I-90 Lookout Pass - Idaho/Montana border 2016
« on: February 26, 2016, 02:05:32 pm »
An early heads up. Idaho Transportation Department will be resuming work on I-90 between Mullan and Lookout Pass on April 11. This project is extensive and closes I-90 to cyclists. They will have a shuttle system like they did in 2015.
The Idaho Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator offered a couple of alternative routes to avoid the shuttle and the construction on I-90:
Northern Route (going westbound)
Exit I-90 at Regis, MT.  Go east on Hwy. 135 to Hwy. 200.  Go north to Thompson Falls.  Turn west onto MT Secondary Hwy. 471 to Thompson Pass.  Continue over the pass into Idaho passing through Murray, Prichard, Enaville and Kingston.  Rejoin I-90 at Exit 43.  The road is paved all the way, very scenic and frequently used by cyclists.
Southern Route (going westbound)
Note:  There is no viable southern option for road cyclists.
However, if bicycles are set up for gravel, i.e., a mountain bike or a bike with at least 700x32c tires; there is a much shorter detour—only 11.5 miles.  It is the NorPac Trail.  Details can be found at
Going westbound the trail starts at the Lookout Pass Ski Area on I-90.

For more information see this blog post from June 2015 on the first half of the project:

The Thompson Falls route is SOOOOOOO much better than I-90 anyway.

There is a great bike/ped bridge over the falls at Thompson Falls.

And Murray, Idaho is the perfect Old West near-ghost town.

This alternate route looks great.  I wish I had known about it last summer when I did a cross US trip. I thought that I would have to use I-90 to hook up with the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes bike path. I didn't know about the construction at the pass so had to take the shuttle. I see that this route intersects with the bike path at just the place where it gets most interesting.
