camping in the Shenandoah valley
« on: March 21, 2016, 04:23:22 pm »
I'm riding down the Shenandoah Valley to join the Transam at Vesuvius. I'm looking for somewhere to camp around Mt. Jackson / Timberville but the campsites I've checked so far want $40 for a night ! Has anyone got suggestions which will be cheaper ?
many thanks.

I have camped at the Elizabeth Furnace USFS campground at the northern end of Fort Valley. It was about $14 and was very nice. This is on the opposite side of Massanutten Mountain from Mount Jackson but is not difficult to reach from the Front Royal and Strasburg area. It is a very scenic ride from here down Fort Valley headed south toward Vesuvius, but you would need to cross Massanutten at the southern end and depending on which way you go there could be unpaved roads.

Thanks for the info. Its a bit out of my way. I'm now looking at the Skyline drive which has a couple of cheap campsites along the route, its a bit hillier than I want at the start of the ride but $40 is too much.
