Getting the bike to Banff for the GDR?
« on: May 28, 2016, 12:36:38 pm »
Hey friends,
My buddy and I will be starting the GDR in the middle of June.  We live in Pittsburgh and are trying to decide whether we should ship the bikes to Banff/Calgary ahead of time or if we should just fly them out with us.  Any advice on the cheapest, most effective way would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Drew

GDR ? German Democratik Republic ? If is yes, it was yesterday. What do you mean?

He's talking about the Great Divide [Mountain Bike] Route, hence the mention of two cities in Canada.

OP: You can check bikeflights.com, which is a discount bike shipping service that primarily uses FedEx. Just shipped my large LHT, racks, stove and empty fuel bottle from Philly to Missoula for $64, including $1,600 in insurance. However, because you are talking Canada, it my be more economical to fly the bikes.

Take them with you. Never know where they will end up. Get to Calgary airport. Set up and go. Avoid highway #1 with bikes (busy). My take on riding in Canada. Is that traffic is not respectful of cyclists. Many driving while texting, drinking, etc. Not concentrating on road.Take alternatives.  :o

I had my bike shipped to the hotel I started in, but it's international so it might be pretty costly, be careful with the tax too..

I like to ship my bike to the hotel. I usually find it in my room when I arrive. Only once did it arrive the next day. Label it [name] guest [date of arrival] [name, address of hotel]
