Mississippi River barge ride
« on: June 29, 2016, 03:05:55 pm »
I'm pedaling the length of the Mississippi River this fall, all the way down to New Orleans, Louisianna. On the way, I would like to experience putting my bike on a barge and go for a short cruise and pass through a set of locks.  Anyone have any knowledge about how this could be done?  They have expensive paddle wheelers and tour boats but they are budget busters.

A couple of girls did that in 1943. Things might have changed since then mind.

After reading some of their log, it appears things have changed a lot.  Thanks for sending that.  What gutsy girls.  It was another age, simple and relaxed.

Uhh, I don't think 1943 was a "simple and relaxed" age.

...Ignoring the realities of the war, the lifestyle is of what I am speaking.

It surprised me how little mention of the war they made. Towards the end they mention some boys they knew in the military but I would have thought New Orleans would have been buzzing with wartime activity in 1943.
