« on: July 08, 2016, 05:06:15 pm »
Hi everyone, well, let me tell you, my best friend and I are planing this year make our first trip along the pacific route. We have so many question about it, that we are planing it with anticipation because we really don't want to messed up. We are used to use hiking boots while riding, I personally use my Comfort High GTX, buuuut thinking about different kind of weather in California compared to Bozeman, Montana, it will be boots shoes the perfects based on our experience?

Thanks a lot!

For bike touring I recommend bicycle sandals.  And use SPD cleats on the bottom.  Shimano makes sandals.  Other companies also make them.

If you're use to riding with boots, and you like riding with boots, then I see no reason to change because of California weather. There might be many, many other reasons to change, but I don't see weather as one of them.

Assuming you're using platform pedals, I'd go with something lighter for the warmer weather -- perhaps a pair of trail running shoes that'd let you go for hikes if you want to.  I'd throw in a pair of sandals for the beaches you'll be around; lightweight, cool, wading without soggy shoes, and keeps the sand out of your riding shoes.

Since you said Pacific Route, I assume you will be riding near the coast.  If so the temperatures will be moderate.  More inland heat is a bigger issue but on the coast not so much, so temperatures are not likely to be a major factor.

Use what you typically like elsewhere and you will be fine.

Personally I don't get why folks like to ride in boots or sandals when cranking out long miles, but I guess it is a matter of personal preference.  I much prefer a pair of bike shoes with plenty of mesh for good ventilation, drying, and drainage.

Sandals are superior to your biking shoes for everything you say is important to you.  Sandals eliminate the use of mesh entirely.  So sandals provide great, not good, but great ventilation.  Great drying.  Great drainage.  Mountain bike shoes have their place.  Such as when mountain biking and you might hit your foot on a rock or tree or crash.  And they are better than sandals when you might hit your foot on something.  When I tour I don't hit my feet on stuff.  So sandals are superior to shoes for touring.

No matter what kind of shoes/sandals you get make sure you have overshoes. I did the N Cal Pacific coast this October and it was very wet. My experience is that no overshoe will keep your feet dry in heavy rain i don't care how much you spend on them, after all if you have clipless pedals they have to have a hole in the bottom and water will eventually wick in. What you do need overshoes for is to keep your feet warm. To that end wool socks are big help.

For me sandals offer nothing but chaffing and sores from the straps and road grit. I would ride in mtn bike shoes with a pair of Crocs or Xero shoes for off bike activities

Second that. I use Merrels Mens Slippers which are very light and despite their name have a robust sole - not trivial the only time I encountered goat heads was through the sole of imitation Crocs.

Reported to mods.  Hopefully they will at least remove the link in the spam post.  Better yet remove posting rights for the bot, but a new one will pop up any way.  I wish they would lock out replying to old threads.
