TA Town List, W2E
« on: July 24, 2016, 08:51:44 am »
Hey all,

I'm considering the TA road race next year. Wondering if there is a listing of the major towns along the route (W2E) for planning purposes, posted anywhere on the internet or for sale. Would likely carry it with me during the race. Thanks all, happy riding.

Get the map set.  It lists services (grocery stores, bike shops, etc.) in each town along the way.  Plus, you'll want the maps for navigation.

Thanks Pat,

I did pick up the paper maps and GPX maps for the first 2 sections. I live in Central Oregon so may use the route for training. I figured I check this group to see if someone had previously listed the towns, distances, etc on a word doc or spreadsheet that I could access. If there doesn't end up being one out there I may create one and have it available to all.

Thanks.

I did the TA a few years back and was negatively amazed by how many errors the newly updated maps incl their freshly downloaded addendums had:

1. Closed grocery stores
2. Closed roads

... and when talking to the locals these closures were not new at all but have been in effect for years at worst.

I learnt a great deal about the erros by talking to other cyclist going in the other direction.

I have absolutely no idea what good this will do you, but here are the cities on the TransAm from East to West as of the 2010 maps. Sorry, but you'll have to reverse the list.

So did you report your observations to ACA?

+1

It'll usually get you a personal thank you from the ACA. I've filed over 50 map correction forms. The ACA needs us!

When I have seen something significant I have said something. By significant I mean things like the closing or opening of a campground or the closing of the only grocery store around. If it's the closure of something like a restaurant in a town or city that has alternatives, I usually don't.

If I will be camping somewhere with few services around, a practice that I like to follow is to shop for groceries in a place where there are more services and then carry to my destination. This worked extremely well one day on the Great Parks South route. The map showed a store close to my destination, but I shopped in a larger town maybe 10 miles away in case the other place closed early or wasn't open that day. When I rode past the store closest to the campground I saw that it had burned to the ground. A worker at the campground told me the fire had happened only a few week prior. Two years ago, while riding part of the Trans Am, I shopped at the good grocery store in Darby, MT and carried for some 18 miles in case the store at the Sula campground was not open when I arrived. Sure enough, I arrived two minutes after closing time, and the place was locked up tight.
