best type of tagalong (trail-a-bike) for touring

My son is 4.5 years old and has just about outgrown his Burley trailer.  We have done lots of day rides and commuting to/from school, and now I would like to take him on multi-day bike tours.  (I'm an experienced cycle tourist.)  He has a kid's bike with training wheels, so I think he has a feel for sitting and balancing on a bike.  My Q: I'm not sure what type of tagalong would be best for cycle touring.  I'm considering the Weehoo i Go, but would like input from other folks before I purchase it.  I've considered a tandem and modifying the stoker's pedals for him, but a tandem seems like a lot of $$$ and perhaps something for us to consider when he gets a little older.  Thanks!

We started our son on our tandem and a triplet (3-seat tandem) around age five. He's now almost 12 and still loves it. Hands down a tandem with a stoker kit is the best option if you want to do longer rides. Second best is a tag-along like the Burley Piccolo or Weehoo. The Weehoo is better for younger kids because it's kind of a cross between a trailer and trail-a-bike, but I think the Burley gives more of a "real bike" experience. We had a Burley Piccolo before we got the tandem set up with the stoker kit, and I think it handled really well. Their mounting system is rock solid. Don't waste your money on anything that clamps to the seatpost.

Not bumping - reviving a 7 year-old question.

I used a tandem Adams trail-a-bike pulled easily by either my single or our tandem when my youngest was 4 years old. He started with a back support and seat belt. That was more than 25 y ago.

When did she start to drive her own bike then? Do you remember what kind of bike was that?
 I am looking forward to buy a first bike for my 4 yo daugther and might need some advices.
Friend recommended me to check with the quietkat customer service here for the kids bikes and asl all the questions too.
What is your opinion on this one?
