Great Divide MBR to San Diego dirt road connection recommendations wanted

We're currently in New Mexico on the GDMBR and plan to ride across to San Diego from either Silvercity or Hatchita. We'd prefer to do at least some of this off paved highways and wondered if anyone has done something similar, or has any suggestions please!
We're riding rigid 29" Surly Ogres with light touring loads so happy to do some mountain biking provided there's not too much super technical stuff - We've loved all the rougher more technical sections of the GDMBR  :)

Several people started a discussion on how to connect GDMBR to the AZT (Arizona Trail). They might have some ideas.

Reach out to Scott, the post originator, he is well versed in that area (AZT Race coordinator?)  GPS guru, GDMBR finisher (I think)
