Basemap for Trans Am Trail - Newbie Question

I am riding the Trans Am Trail East to West this year - I have the maps and a Garmin Etrex 30 which I'd like to load with the GPS data. My question is this - what basemap do I need to make this work? Do I go to OSM and load one huge file for the whole of the USA - or do I select a dozen different files for every state I go through, VA, KY, etc? Or do I buy a Garmin basemap? I am travelling from England so I presumably I won't know if it works until I get to the States. I'd like to make sure that I get the right basemap that will work with the ACA GPS files. Thank you for your help.
