I am not very far from you, PB -- just down the road in Calgary. Definitely lots of great road cycling and bikepacking opportunities in Western Canada. The Icefields Parkway, Canadian portion of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and the Trans Canada Trail (particularly the rails to trails sections, like the Kettle Valley Railway) are some of my favourites.

Darren would like to try Canmore area. This year my buddy and I plan to Visit some of the Ukrainian communities in Alberta this summer. East of Edmonton by Elk Island park, Mundare (Kolbassa), and Vegreville to see the Pynsanka. Eat a pile of Perogies and head back to Edmonton. About 200km ride over a weekend. Next year do the Jasper-Banff run.

There is nothing like a gutfull of perogies, butter and onions, and garlicy kolbasa to make for an awesome bike trip westward into the wind on the prairies!

Despite the wind, I would take the lead on that paceline with that proposed diet.   ;)

Riding from Illinois to Rochester N.Y., trying to decide if I should go through Canada as opposed to Cleveland to Buffalo.  Looking for suggestions......Detroit or Ferry?  ease of crossing border?

Note that the only Legal crossing in Detroit is in the tunnel using the bus with at the drivers convenience.  There are 2 crossing North of Detroit, the ferry north of lake st Clair and the Marine City Ferry, closer to Port Huron.  If you want to avoid larger cities, go thru Canada at the Marine City or Pelee Island Ferry and follow the waterfront trail to Queenston.  Going thru the US allows you to stop at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.  My preference would be for going thru Canada.  I have circled Lake Erie using the Marine City Ferry and then avoided Detroit and Toledo, reconnecting with the lake near Sandusky.  US 2 had bicycle restrictions West of Sandusky when I did it, so avoiding Toledo was almost required.
