Pacific Coast Central (Eugene, OR to San Francisco, CA)
« on: December 06, 2016, 09:09:33 pm »
Planning to take off the first of June 2017.  Would love to hear any experiences people have had (weather, must sees, campgrounds, restaurants/coffee, packing list, etc.).  Thanks so much!

Here's a link to the experiences of 821 people on the Pacific Coast Route.

Expect helpful north winds, lots of good campgrounds, and places to buy food every day, so you don't have to carry much. Also, there will be tourist traffic, some of it wide trailers and oblivious drivers.  Use a mirror and watch your back.  We found the worst drivers were in the 80 miles from SF north.
May the wind be at your back!

Oregon Coast is great- the State Parks have hiker/biker campsites that are super cheap and a great place to meet other riders and wind down after a day of riding. There is a decent shoulder through most of Oregon but if memory serves me correctly that will disappear when you get into California. The redwoods of N. California will blow your mind if you have not ridden through them before. Pedaling south you will have the wind at your back which is always nice. Enjoy your ride!

Hey. I'm tacking on this ride after the trans-am trail next year. I'm very interested in the responses to this.

June should be a good time to do it. I made the mistake of going in October this year and got headwinds and heavy rain for a lot of it. the last 120 miles or so to SFO is very scenic, has lousy shoulders and heavy traffic, so be careful. The descent from the Legget climb is a blast.
