MRT (Mississippi River Trail)
« on: February 07, 2017, 12:58:39 pm »
Does anyone know if the MRT still exists? I believe the MRT is the same route as the Great River Road, is this correct? The reason I'm asking is, there used to be a great website dedicated only to the MRT that is no longer online. This website was made available by the MRT association I believe. Did they decommission the MRT and just designate it as the Great River Road? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Safe travels everyone, be careful out there and have fun!

There is a Rail Trail with that name if that's what you're looking for. Check out traillink.com

Hi Bicycle Ranger,

The MRT does still exist but the non-profit group that supported its development has ceased to exist in any formal state. While parts of the MRT are also the Great River Road, not all of it co-aligns. I think you might be able to find archived info about the MRT on this website: http://www.mississippirivertrail.org/ and Bob Robinson wrote a trail guide: https://www.amazon.com/Bicycling-Guide-Mississippi-River-Trail/dp/0981895204

The MRT is being supported through the National Geographic Geo Tourism project: http://mississippiriver.natgeotourism.com/ and individual state trail projects. Iowa and MN are the best supported/developed. Minnesota's section of the MRT is also designated as UBR 45 (see adventurecycling.org/usbrs and then search Maps and Route Resources). You can find DOT maps of the route: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/bike/mrt/ and Iowa: http://www.ctre.iastate.edu/mrt/

I believe there is also a great deal of traction around Memphis and the MRT due to the opening of the Harahan Bridge. I found this site which offers some links: http://www.lmrcc.org/outdoor-recreation/bicycling/

I hope all this helps!

I appreciate the replies my friends. I tried using the mississippirivertrail.org link but its a dead link, unfortunately. I been eyeing the MRT for a while now and was seriously considering riding it in the near future. But as fate tends to be, when one really wants to do something, it somehow finds a way to make it difficult in making ones desires a reality. But, where there's two bicycle wheels, there's a way! 😁

I was able to get

 http://www.lmrcc.org/outdoor-recreation/bicycling/

to appear and using the Internet Archive Wayback machine site,  I was able to get an archived version of the MRT website to come up at this link

http://web.archive.org/web/20100803045056/http://www.mississippirivertrail.org/

This address and phone number were on the MRT webpage though I have no idea if they are still good.
