Utah Road Cycling Restrictions ?
« on: February 08, 2017, 07:35:22 pm »
Looking for information on any restricted roads in Utah. At the moment, I'm especially interested in I 70. I've been on the UDOT web site and can't find it. thanks in advance for any assistance. Jim

I googled "Utah bicycle restrictions on highways" and got this post from a Utah bike lawyer from a few years ago:
http://www.utahbicyclelawyers.com/riding-restrictions-and-safety
I'm assuming that the info is still valid.

In a nutshell, state highways are rideable, except freeways in urban areas. Most of the restrictions are Salt Lake metro and the other cities along I-15 in the northern part of the state, along with restrictions on I-15 around St. George and Cedar City. It doesn't say anything about I-70, but that freeway doesn't touch anything that can be considered "metro", so you should be good to go.

As a general rule of thumb, interstate highways in the West allow cyclists on the shoulder, unless it's through a metro area or there's a significant stretch of shoulderless highway.

I don't how well the links will work. They are links to Utah DOT maps, one of which will show the state highways that prohibit bicycles. The entire route of I-70 in Utah permits bicycling since it is all rural.  In Zion National Park, the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel is closed to bicycling.

And if you don't get your questions adequately answered by the resources already offered, you can contact the Utah Bicycle and Pedestrian staff. Contact information (and more links) found here:

Hi Jennifer!

Hey I just wanted to let you know that I tried emailing the bicycle coordinator and got a bounce back message that it's an invalid email. I will try to call this week to find out what's up, but for now, that email doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks, Slowroll for letting me know about the bounce back. I'll let others know who might be able to get it updated.

No problem Jennifer, just an FYI I got the following reply back from Daniel Page from UDOT:

Evelyn retired a while back, but I have listed the bicycle contact for udot below.
Heidi Goedhart
tel:801-783-8426
mailto:hgoedhart@utah.gov

--
Daniel Page, S.E.
UDOT Region 2
East District Engineer
801-975-4851 (work)
dpage@utah.gov

I've sent out an email to Heidi but yesterday was a government holiday and I haven't heard back from her yet. It didn't bounce back though so at least the email appears to be working. I'll give it a day or so and then will give her a call if I don't get a reply.
