Difficulty downloading OSM basemap.
« on: March 03, 2017, 05:44:10 am »
Hi all

Can anyone help. I have downloaded a map from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ for North America as I'm doing the transam trail end of April early May.
Ive been sent the link to dwonload the map. I click on the file to download it. It goes into my downloads folder and then when I click on the zip file it extracts
the file but i get a message that reads.....

Unable to expand "osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip" into "Downloads". (Error 2 - No such file or directory.)

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

That's a rather clunky site.  Did you remember to select all the areas you need?  It might be quicker and easier to download the 10 states on the TransAm individually.

There's another site that lets you grab the whole thing at once at http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/
Go to the "latest" directory and read the Readme to pick your package.  Or, if your GPS has the memory, just grab the 4000MB-lon_-170.97_to_-74.05.2017-02-25.gmapsupp.img.

What map did you attempt to download? I am not aware of any way to download the entire North America map from one link on that web site.

I suggest you follow Pat's recommendation to download one state at a time. Remember to rename each IMG file by state name, sequence number, or something else, so you have 10 unique files. Or download the entire 4GB file (currently, the latest is at 4000MB-lon_-170.97_to_-74.05.2017-02-25.gmapsupp.img.

What device do you have? Most Garmin devices allow for a micro SD card that can easily store 4GB & 8GB files.

Store the file under the "Garmin" folder on your device. On an SD card, create a new folder with the name "Garmin", then store the map in that folder.

Hey Pat.

Again apologies for the late reply. As I've noted in a reply already I'm not the most advanced when it come to tech stuff and it goes over my head a bit. Is the link you've posted for the whole of North America?

For the purposes of TransAm, this should cover the route.

As the file name implies, it covers latitudes 170.97ºW–74.05ºW. These leave out sections on the fringes such as New England, Alaska, etc.

Or you can download map for the entire world from file 2017-02-25/8000MB-lon_-170.97_to_161.63.2017-02-25.gmapsupp.img on 8GB microSD card.
