Bike recommendations for Florida rider
« on: May 02, 2017, 09:46:36 am »
I'm getting into adv cycling with my son. Wondering if there are certain bikes or features on a bike that are best for our region. Any purchasing tips will help.
We are relatively new riders with some mountain bike experience and lots of time on our hands to train.
Thanks!
Doug

Not sure what your budget is, but take a look at the Trek Marlin 5. Very fun all around bike - in town, on tame trails, on rowdy trails/descents. Does it all. I love riding mine down staircases.

You'll get better advice if you can provide more details, such as:
  • Do you plan to ride on paved roads and paths, dirt roads and paths, trails?
  • What kind of distances do you expect to ride? 5 miles? 20 miles? 50 miles? 100 miles?
  • You are in Florida, which is mostly flat, but do you ever plan to take your bike to hilly or mountainous areas?
  • Do you plan to do group rides (where you might need to ride fast in order to keep up)?
  • Do you need to carry stuff? Groceries home from the store? Camping gear for touring? Overnight touring? Week touring? Cross-country touring?
  • Do you have medical issues that need to be accommodated, such as back issues, wrist issues or neck issues?
  • Do you need for one bike to do it all, or might you buy different bikes for different purposes, or buy a different bike as your usage changes? (Spoiler: if you have widely varied interests, it's really not practical to expect one bike to do it all.)
