This discussion area frequently sees requests from riders looking for route suggestions, on and off the Adventure Cycling Route Network. There are a number of experienced, knowledgeable touring cyclists on the forum who would like to help you. You can help them do so by providing some information up front in your request:

  • What is your timeframe for riding this route? Include at least beginning and ending months.
  • What kind of riding do you like? Dislike? Consider things like scenery, hills, urban settings.
  • Are you interested in taking in historic or cultural sites? Or are you on the fast track?
  • What are your overnight preferences? Camping in campgrounds, stealth camping, hotels, Warmshowers, a combination?
  • What is your plan for eating? Restaurants or cooking in camp?
  • How many miles a day do you intend to ride?
These are good questions to be asking yourself anyway as you plan a trip so share them up front when asking for advice.

If you have other suggestions to go on this list, let me know and I'll add them.

I m planning a roughly 480 mile ride starting in NYC on August 20th and ending up in Portland, ME on August 25th going on the inland route (e.g. NOT along the atlantic).  I intend to hit the Adirondack Park Loop at Niskayana just above Albany, then jump to the Northern Tier at Ticonderoga and jumping off roughly at Naples, ME to go to Portland, ME.  I'm an experienced long-distance cyclist, like doing about 80 to 110 miles per day.  My issue is getting from NYC to the Niskayana area.  I understand BR 9 will get me to Poughkeepsie (and that's just over 80 miles from Central Park, where I'll be starting.)  My next leg was going to be from there to Saratoga (108 miles).  But I understand that is west of BR 9.  Any advice on whether I should stay east or go to the West of the Hudson for that part? Any established routes that I seem to be missing?  I hotel/motel/B&B it, eating in local restaurants.  This is solo and unsupported, though at 6'4" and 220 personal safety is a bit easier for me.

Glad to find this site!

I'm hoping to talk my wife into riding with me next summer (2021) from Long Beach to Eureka, CA from August-Sept. We are interested in the route with the least traffic and best camping/hotel spots for comfort and convenience. We plan to carry some light food but eat at restaurants and generally not skimp on too many amenities if possible. We could maybe ride 20+ miles a day, I think, but I'm not sure - never done anything like this!

Thanks!

Justin

Hello all-

Roughly between May 1 2021 and Aug 1 2021 I am planning on biking from Oklahoma City, OK to Medford, OR. I am creating a one man play on climate change that I will perform at campgrounds, schools, churches ect. along the way. This is my first biking tour.

I have been looking at bike routes and while taking Route 66 West seems like the best choice, I am not sure what I should do when I reach California. I do not know whether or not to take the Pacific Coast Route or the Sierra Cascades Route.

To provide some additional information I am looking for a mix of towns to perform my play in and natural spots to camp. I will be cooking meals and camping when needed and staying with a host and eating out when available.

Do you all have any tips on which California Route you would recommend?

Thanks!
Sumner

Hello

I am looking to ride the Northern Route across the US starting when I drop my one child off at University of New Hampshire (possibly go up to Maine to start), layover at home in Michigan until I drop my second child off at University of Michigan on Labor Day weekend and then get back on the road.  Seems like a good year for me to take a bit of a sabattical!  Has anyone ridden this route that can share their experiences?  I would be going east to west so I am not sure about the time of year and riding through September?  Also not sure about traveling solo. One section looks like it crosses into Canada around Niagara falls and that option is likely out.

Thank you!

Julie

Currently all non essential travel to canada is banned.  The ban is thru at least july 21.  Canada has not failed to extend it monthly since it started.
I can give turn by turn directions for rerouting to avoid the canada portion from niagara falls to buffalo.  Much of this detour is on paved paths.

That would be great!  Is it too late in the season to start this journey in August/Sept?

I took 57 days from St. Clair Michigan to Anacortes at a fairly comfortable pace (55 miles per day) and took the ferry from Ludington to Manitowac.  I don't know how the ferry is given Covid-19, but it was a lot of fun last year!

I picked up the Northern Tier at Taylors Falls Minnesota.  I didn't do the short section into Canada near Waterton, but cut across from Browning to St. Mary's so I could ride Going to the Sun westbound.  Don't miss it!

The only issues I had were with dangerous drivers from Wolf Point to Harlem.  Now that the route has moved south, you won't have that problem.

Going all the way to the pacific, I think it would depend on your distance per day and how cold you like to ride in as to if it is too late to start.  I don't know about the weather along the route in the west.

As for the detour from Niagara Falls - Buffalo.

As you come down Upper Mountain Rd, you will turn Right at Military Rd, (there is a traffic light here) just before the on ramp to Canada at the Lewiston Queenston Bridge.  There will be a large hospital on the far right corner.  Take this road to the end, it will have a golf course on both sides.  At the end of the road turn Left onto Lewiston Rd (rt 104).  Take Lewiston road and keep bearing right, first at the school, and then across from the Niagara Falls Library, this road will turn into Main Street in Niagara Falls and will take you right towards the Rainbow bridge to Canada.  Turn left just before the toll booths at the bridge onto Rainbow Blvd.  If you want to visit the Maid of the mist or the American falls turn left at Old Falls Street or continue to the roundabout and take the first right onto 1st street.  On the left side of First street just before the bridge to Goat Island there is a paved path that goes closer to the river.  take this path and keep the river on your right. If you visit the park you can follow various paths keeping the river on your right.
Take this path to the end, it will end at Buffalo Ave after you go under the I-190 bridges to Grand Island.  At the end of the path turn right onto Buffalo Ave.  Take Buffalo Ave until a 4 way stop just before it goes under the Lasalle Expressway bridges.  Turn Right, the road name stays the same(Buffalo Ave),  There is a short bike path on the far side, but ends before the next main intersection.  The road name changes from Buffalo Ave to River Road at the next light(Williams Rd), stay on River Road.  At the start of Gratwick park there appears a bike path on the right, take this path thru the park and along River Road.  When you see the KeyBank on the right at Goundry St the path will seperate from a sidewalk just before a bridge.  Either take the sidewalk road over this bridge over Tonawanda Creek.  At the end of the bridge before the intersection, a path will join the sidewalk, take the path down hill and turn left at the end, (you will almost turn around to get on the path)  This is the Riverwalk path.  Take this path until it ends in Buffalo near Hamilton St,  it does extend to a bridge over I190 but sometimes the gates to the bridge are locked.  Turn left on Hamilton St, then Right on Niagara St.
You can take the rotating train bridge over to Unity Island then take the draw bridge back or stay with Niagara St.  Bear right with Niagara Street after going under a railroad bridge.  The unity island option rejoins at Ferry St.  Niagara St going left at Busti ave.  Stay right and take the right sidewalk as it turns into a bike path going under the Peace bridge and then over the I-190,  ending at Porter Ave.  I believe the current ACA NT route and the UGRR joins here just after crossing the peace bridge.  Turn Right at Porter Ave, a bike path is on the right.

Note Google maps is still routing bikes along non roads that haven't existed in 3 years from the Lewiston Queenston Bridge to the Rainbow Bridge.  Also there is a signed bicycle detour in the same area (going the opposite direction) that sends bicyclist down a dead end street (for cyclists) as the connection to a path and the path has been blocked by several feet of dirt dumped on it for road constrution.

I don't have a Strava route for this.  Google maps is pretty good from Niagara Falls - buffalo, but fails on the section from Upper Mountain Rd to Niagara Falls due to roads that have been destroyed.
