In response to your letter, I have taken my e-bike (really and e-trike) on tour. This summer I rode from Kansas to Utah following the Continental Divide route until I got to Kremmling, CO,  where I Turned West. I used solar panels mounted over the trike, providing both power to charge the battery and a nice sunshade.

At no point did I ever plug in. It can be done and it was a lot of fun.
