It seems that you have an active imagination.

I gather from your earlier posts that you took a route through the national parks of western Wyoming, Jackson Hole, and perhaps, the Star Valley around Afton. If so, the you would have encountered - for the most part - other tourists, millionaire & billionaire fly-in cowboys, and Mormon dairy farmers.

Given your overall trip, I suspect that gun ownership was as high if not higher outside of western Wyoming. And the likelihood of meeting cowboys with real shit on their boots - not grass clipping from the golf course - was higher, too. Please, put your stereotypes in the bottom drawer before you head out next time.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, I didn't mean to.
As I said I didn't know Wyoming at all before, just as I didn't know the other states I visited, so my point of view is as candid as it might be.
I don't think I met many tourists (excepted in Jackson Hole, of course), and no cyclists at all.
My impression comes from how people answered when we asked directions, or asked to fill our bottles with water, or to share a campsite in a full campground at dusk, so I agree it's not an evidence at all, as I said it was just a general feeling I didn't have in other places.
Anyway, my apologies

I have had all those things happen to me at one time or another while on a bike.

I am happy to see that at least three states have outlawed "rolling coal."

If you're comparing Yellowstone to the southern Utah national parks, remember that Yellowstone is the second or third most visited N.P., and there's virtually no infrastructure around it, so you were dealing with mostly tourists.  Those Wyoming license plates were probably from the Jackson car or RV rental centers.  The high plains to the east are like an entirely different state.

If I could go back and ride any state I've ridden, it would be either Montana or Wyoming for the wide-open spaces, the roads, and the scenery.

If I had to drive to get there, it might be Wisconsin in the middle of the summer for cooler weather.  Or the North Carolina mountains.  :)

No offense taken - apology not needed - but thank you.

I notice you are planning a Pacific Coast trip this autumn.
Both last year's trip and your planned trip include very touristy areas.
It's like going to the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa and saying you have seen Italy.
I would be willing to guess that you might suggest the Abruzzo coast or a village in Calabria.

Your planned trip will include lovely coasts - the Oregon coast is superb.
(However, the highway is away from the immediate coast much of the time.)
And most of the coastal towns are swarming with tourists in the summer and early autumn.

If you wish to experience an American Abruzzo or Calabria, I would suggest something inland.
Possibly starting out at Neah Bay, Washington - the NW tip - then then San Juan Islands -
Then heading over the North Cascades and riding though coulee country to the Palouse.

US 395 provides a remote and beautiful route through eastern Oregon.
The road will be almost empty most of the time - with scattered small towns.
Take the time to stop an visit - you will have a different experience.

From Lakeview in southern Oregon, you can cut southwest to Eureka on the California coast.
From there you can ride the redwoods and the northern California coast - ending at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Immediately upon entering Nebraska from the east I got a flat. While repairing it four vehicles, including a state trooper, stopped and asked if they could help. Nothing like this has ever happened before or since.

I love the wide shoulders on the roads in western Texas and the Amish and Mennonite parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The high desert of Eastern Oregon and the spectacular desert scenery of southern Utah were some of my best cycle touring.

The west coast is spectacular but it's hard to get a good, hearty meal. Also I got so tired of the raggedy, begging, drunken bums in the campgrounds that I bailed about Santa Maria and headed inland.

The states I have cycled in Fl, Al, MS, LA, TX, NM, AZ, WA, OR, ID. Oregon is my favorite followed by west Texas. I prefer the lonely roads. Jim

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_coal
It is related to a practice called "crop dusting" where jerks in diesel trucks intentionally emit clouds of black smoke when passing cyclists. It is a despicable practice IMO.  Thankfully I have only experienced it a few times.

I finished the cross country in July.  (I rode TA from Oregon to Kansas and then cut north to Eastern Express to finish second half) A friend asked me last week the same question. I thought for a minute and replied Oregon. I Liked the bit of coast - then McKenzie pass and as well the open mainly quiet roads in Eastern Oregon. 3-4 different styles of scenery all beautiful in one state.  Oregon was my first state too... As they say you never forget your first love so who knows.  On the second half I quite enjoyed Ohio.

Glad to hear that many of you think my home of Wisconsin is great. The most courteous drivers I've encountered were not here but in South Dakota. We have great scenic roads in Wisconsin, and no gravel roads (except Up North) but the motorists can't compare with Minnesota and South Dakota. Roads in Maine were the worst. Most beautiful would be (outside WI) Washington and Oregon.

If I told you what state was my favorite to ride in everyone would want to go there to ride.  Sort of like when Outdoor Magazine gives a list of the top 10 unknown spots that you need to go see - and everyone does.   The excellent paved bicycle trails that run miles across and up my home state would be packed with other riders which would take away the enjoyment I get when riding these paved bicycle trails.  So please go to Oregon, Washington and other states that have been listed in this posting!
