Transport to Florence from PDX
« on: June 24, 2017, 02:58:42 pm »
Hi Fellow Travelers -

My wife and I will be going on the TransAm from Florence, OR. east from Aug.-Oct.  I was hoping to get some advice about the most convenient way to get from Portland (where I'll be shipping our bikes) to Florence.  It doesn't seem like there is any public transport to Florence, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Also, does anyone have any thoughts about where to camp between Florence and Eugene?  I planned on staying at the Triangle Lake campground, but it seems that it's closed.

Thanks,

Eric

There is a bus that runs from Eugene to Florence and then Coos Bay:

NOTE: I have not used this bus before. They don't talk about bikes, so I'd contact them. (I'm guessing they will take bikes.)

So, from Portland, you could take Amtrak down to Eugene, and then take this bus to the coast!

I am on a tour right now so I don't have my notes with me from last year's Crossing. I also started in Florence and went through Eugene. When I left Florence  it was afternoon so it seems like I only went about 25 miles that first afternoon and stopped at a small church - camped in their yard they were very  friendly and they were listed on the map set. Then I went to Eugene the next day where I stayed with family but I did notice a campground that was probably 10 to 15 miles before Eugene, Fern Ridge I believe.  I don't remember if that lake is on the route or if that is at the point where I got lost for a little while.

Regarding transportation, when I checked about six months ago they did not allow roll aboard.  Only a boxed bike. If you had it shipped to Portland I would leave it in the box to get it to Eugene at least or could  have it shipped directly to Eugene.  Eugene is a bicycling city and there is an abundance of good bike shops there.

???
There is roll on bike service on Amtrak between Portland and Eugene. We've had it since the late '90's, on the Cascades line. And now the Coast Starlight has roll on service as well. So every train between Portland and Eugene has roll on service.
