GDMBR Section 1, Map A, Rice Ridge Fire Closure, July 2017
« on: July 26, 2017, 03:51:47 pm »
The Rice Ridge Fire has closed a section of the GDMBR near Seeley Lake, MT. On Section 1, Map A, at Milepost 225.2: Instead of turning left onto FR 4353, continue straight onto 4353 and follow it out to the highway, SR 83. Then take SR 83 south into Seeley Lake to rejoin the route just north of town.

This fire has grown in size and burned to within two miles of Cottonwood Lakes Rd. (on map 1B east of Seeley Lake) and within 4 miles of Highway 83. Cottonwood Lakes Rd./FS 477, is now closed to the public.

To detour, southbound, after Seeley Lake, take Highway 83 south. At the intersection of Highway 83 and Highway 200, take Highway 200 east to Ovando.

Please check the Rice Ridge Fire incident page: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5414/

Another update for the detour: FR 4353 is now included in the fire area closure, which we suggested as a detour to reach Highway 83. See the Aug 1 post.

At mile 219.6, turn right onto Clearwater Lake Loop Rd./FR 4370. Follow it to Highway 83 and turn left to reach Seeley Lake. After Seeley Lake, take Highway 83 south. At the intersection of Highway 83 and Highway 200, take Highway 200 east to Ovando.

Hello,

Any idea on how long the GDMBR will be close? Can you speculate a guess? I am leaving from whitefish headed south in ~2weeks..

Thanks for all the great updated info! It is greatly appreciated!

Portions of the route here in Montana won't be open until we get some significant rainfall without lightning strikes. That's the only way some of these large fires will be put out. The air is so bad in Seeley Lake right now the health department is telling all residents to leave.

It's very difficult to say when there will be a major change in the weather.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I will have to look at another route going around Glacier NP or something for a week or 2...

On Map 1B, Cottonwood Lakes Rd./FR 447 is now closed for 19 miles (SB) all the way to FR 5405. You still need to take the detour on SR 200 and SR 83. The Monture Campground is closed also.

There are many campgrounds on the 83/200 pavement detour for this fire. The Salmon Lake state park campground, which is about 7 miles south of Seeley Lake, has very nice hiker/biker sites and showers.
