Was just turning into the Smith-Dorian Spray road at11:30am Local Time. Was informed by a conservation officer that all trails SOuth of Elk pass are closed. All BC national/provincial parks are closed due to fires. We will be seaking transport via car/bus/train to southern MT, as that will be the closest area where the GDMBR will be reliabaly passable. Difficult to find more info, so that's all I got. Wish us luck!!

As you look, remember that Grave Creek out of Eureka is/was closed. Then just south of Holland Lake to Lincoln is closed and requires detours. Not sure about south of Lincoln but I think your ok from there, southward.

Might look at detour via Waterton, then south on the east side of the mountains to Lincoln, or Helena

Backcountry access through most of the southeastern corner of BC and southwestern corner of AB is now closed due to fire risk. Primary and secondary highways are still open, but that's about it.

I have just come through BC just ahead of the closures, over the Whitefish Range to avoid Grave Ck, then took to the road from Bigfork. The smoke is BAD, down to 100m visibility around Seeley Lakes. You wouldn't want to come this way even if you could. I am now at Lincoln and the route is OK from here at present but the visibility is still massively impaired.

Update: our plan had been to rent a car and drive to Butte and continue S of fire closure however after speaking with the Butte Ranger Disttict a fire closed the GDMBR south of Butte. The rangers suggestted starting in Polaris and heading S and that even Polaris and S the air quality is very poor. Those traveling will have to find alt route from Butte to polaris. Or at thevery least Butte to S of wise river. S of wise river is all pavement. Not sure of the road status. Butte ranger district: 406-494-2147.

Is there any route from Butte to Wise River other than using I15

Offline Rcanderson11

@janeshearer I do not know and I am sorry. Looking at the ACA maps it doesn't look like there is.  On Monday the 11 we will be driving back to Butte and from there driving to Cheyenne, WY. Post here if you are in need of transport. We can try to help and exchange contact info. My name is RC and my partners name is Katie.

Thx for the offer but think I will plug on. Made it to Butte now (on official route through from Lincoln) and last 2 days ok plus rain last night was good. Phone is 805-319-9491 if any reason to talk. Am feeling like Route tail end Charlie for the year!

I will ring the rangers tomorrow to check but I can't see any closures on the web in the area of the Divide Route. Where were you being told you couldn't go?

I don't see anything south of Butte as well.  Definately call the local Forest Service offices.  Both the Butte district and (it appears) the office that runs the Beaverhead National Forest (closer to Wise River).

BTW - I use this map for fire perimeters.  Seems to be updated regularly.

Yes, we were told by the butte area ranger office that s of Butte was closed. But call them. All of our plans changed when we were told we couldn't pass S. I'd call. Would be bummed if our plans changed for no reason.

Sorry to tell you that over the last 2 days I cycled Butte to Wise River and Wise River to Hansen Ranch. Zero problems or evidence of fire. I did try calling the rangers but the woman I was put through to never called me back. Maybe a good thing for me!

Hi - currently at Pincher Creek travelling south. Been thwarted by route closures - anyone recently cycled Fernie Way? What are conditions like?  Not sure whether to head for Cardston staying to East of the fires - any advice / info would be appreciated - thanks
