ACA Tour catalog question
« on: October 01, 2017, 02:09:05 pm »
I just received a Grab Your Bike & GO catalog and in the index listing of tours there is a number that ranges from 10-80. Is this number a minimum for the trip to be a go, or is it a maximum number allowed, or an average number of riders participating?

I'd like to help. Can you be more specific about where you are seeing this number that is unclear? Perhaps a page number and tour name where you are seeing this?

Jennifer,
It was at the back of the catalog where there is a text only listing of the rides. I don't have the catalog with me at this time.
Basically it gives the ride name, the dates of the ride, the number I mentioned and a little other information.

Hmm, I see the pages and listings you are referring to. It looks to me like all numbers (other than dates) have a descriptor attached to them: ex. 12 Days, 13 Riders, Page 52.

Next time you look at those pages, if you have a specific listing example that is missing this information or is confusing, let me know and I'll look at it, too.

It seems to me that the OP is perhaps asking what "13 Riders" means. Is "13" the min, max or average?

Ah, good catch, John. I think you may be correct.

If that is correct, I have the answer! That number is the maximum number of riders for that tour.

Just received my catalog yesterday. Love the photo of what I believe is the Green River covered bridge next to the description of the New England Villages and Streams tour. I have a photo of that bridge somewhere on my home computer. The area on the south side of the bridge has served as the lunch stop for D2R2, which is a mostly dirt road randonee ride that starts and ends in Deerfield, MA, where I happened to attend high school several decades ago. Terrific and challenging ride if you are in the area. They feed you well, and the money raised goes to preserving open space in Franklin County, MA.

In general, the area that tour covers has some really great riding. The tour description mentions white-steepled churches. There are certainly a lot in that area.

The old brick church in historic Deerfield:

Westhampton, MA, not that far from where the tour starts:

Just be wary of the giant cats  ;D:

Heh. Just read the tour description and saw that the first day goes through Deerfield on the way to Brattleboro. The above photos are from last year's tour from Brattleboro home to Philly. If you go, make sure you take a spin down Albany Road that bisects part of Deerfield Academy. The old cemetery is on the left and the end of the street, before the driveway down to the athletic fields.

I wonder where the photo on the upper right corner of the cover was taken. Outside Boulder CO? Boulder Canyon? Was it on one of the tours? I grew up in Boulder and would love to combine a family visit with a tour.

It's a great catalog. I can't decide which tour to do next. I'm glad there are more tours offered on the east coast, but I love going out west.

I've been told by the catalog designer this photo is actually in Idaho in the Yaak region near the Kootenay River.

Another beautiful spot in the west to tour by bike! It would be part of the Selkirk Splendor tour:

Speaking of Yaaks, back in June I rode to Yaak, MT via Troy and spend two nights there. Incredibly beautiful. The ride to Rexford on Lake Koocanusa was amazing. Until I hit the lake I encountered maybe 5 moving vehicles. About as off the beaten path as you can get.

About 3 miles west of Yaak is U.S.F.S. campground Pete Creek. Nice place, and there are food and limited groceries in Yaak itself.

That is the question I was asking. Thank you both for your replies. Sorry I was so late responding. I was away from a computer for a few weeks.

A follow on question. What is the minimum number of riders required for a trip to occur? For example; on pg 54 of the catalog there is this, Blue Ridge Bliss-North Carolina 6/2-6/8 $1399 7 days Location: VA 25 riders Page 22.

If only 8 people(for example) sign up is the ride a go or no-go?

Greetings. The minimum number of riders that are required for a tour to go varies based on the tour type and the specific expenses for a tour. A general guideline would be 5 for a self contained tour, 7 for a van tour or Inn to Inn, and 22 for a fully supported tour. However, the Blue Ridge is a special one and need only 15. We are currently at 19 with only 6 spots remaining. This tour will GO and will sell out in the next few weeks. Sign up soon.
