Amtrak - Vancouver (Canada) to Seattle
« on: October 09, 2017, 10:26:31 am »
Hi
12 of us are flying into Seattle from England, cycling to Vancouver via the Olympic National Park, Suan Juan Islands and other glorious places.
My question is
'Will Amtrak take 12 bikes together on the same train'
I seem to recall there is a 10 bike limit on a train
I'm 99% sure we don't need to box them.

Any links to a website would be appreciated
   Thankyou

If you are talking about the Cascades service, the limit is 10. No boxing required.

Show details for Carry-On service. Reservations required.

Could the train carry two more boxed bikes as luggage?

It should be able to. I did take a boxed bike on the Cascades from Vancouver BC to Seattle several years ago. But that was several years ago, so one should double check. The big issue is that everything getting on that train at Pacific Central Station has to go through US Customs preclearance, so that would mean you'd have to drag the box through. They may let you box it on the other side, though.

The schedule shows checked baggage service, so it's possible they will also accept two boxed bikes as well. I would try to confirm.

Hi everyone - thanks for helping answer Neil's questions about Amtrak's bike service on the Cascades. You are all on the right path - boxing the remaining 2 bikes as checked baggage is possible. For the other 10, it's very important to make the bike reservation so all 10 are accommodated. As for the boxed, checked baggage option, some station managers get confused regarding this option, so it would be good to reference this page when you check your boxes: https://www.amtrak.com/bring-your-bicycle-onboard. You will find all the relevant information about bicycle accommodations on Amtrak located here in an easy to find format.

In addition, please note all the great tools we have regarding planning a bike trip and using Amtrak.

Our map overlay tool: https://www.adventurecycling.org/amtrak-map
And a trip planning spreadsheet that can help you with transfers: https://www.adventurecycling.org/bicycle-tourism/multi-modal-travel/

Thanks again - and Neil I hope you all have a great trip to the Northwest

Yeah. I forgot to suggest that you make reservations way early and be prepared to box more than two bikes if some of the spaces are already filled, especially during the height of tourist season.
