Touring from Miami to Asheville NC then over to Nashville
« on: January 24, 2018, 05:19:26 pm »
Hey everyone.
I'm looking to start riding on Feb 8th or so from Miami to Asheville and am wondering if there is any tent camping along the coast in Florida I've been looking for a while and it seems like all places have RV/tent sites and the snowbirds have taking them all with there RV's. Am I out of luck and have to get motels. I dont really want to do that because of the cost. It look's like camping in the other sites should be kind of easy. It's hard tp reserve a camp site not knowing my timing during the trip because of weather or how I'm feeling.

Please help.

I have a couple of suggestions. You could call ahead to some of these campgrounds and see if they have a policy for what to do if a traveling cyclist shows up and needs a little grass space to pitch a tent. Some will be accommodating and some won't. I understand this is a gamble.

Another option is Warmshowers. Are you familiar with them? They are similar to Couchsurfing but are specific to bicycle travelers. It looks like there a number of options along the Florida coast. I think you'll need to create an account there to be able to see the offerings but it might be worth doing. There is an expectation that you would return the favor to other cyclists down the road, once you've returned home, so keep that in mind as well. The system only works as long as people participate in both hosting and being a guest.

Good luck and have a great trip!
