Experience with Bikes on Greyhound Bus

I'm planning a tour for the spring but would like the option of taking Greyhound through less than ideal areas to save time and give me more options to visit interesting places off the ACA routes. I've read on the Greyhound website that the max size for luggage is 62inches (157cm), which MIGHT fit a bike box, but they also have a Greyhound luggage service that will transport larger items from some destinations. Not sure if they would take bikes, or have the capacity to do so in most places.

Does anyone here have experience mixing Greyhound into their route planning, and if so, what would be good to know/plan for?

Yes they do take bike boxes for a small fee, I think ~$20.  However, getting a bike box in remote places might be a problem.  Also, you might look into 1-way rentals (including U-Haul) to see if that is an option if Greyhound is not.

Greyhound will accept bikes in a bag.  I made one from a cheap tarp.  Since you personally bring the bike to the bus for loading, you can watch or sometimes load it yourself - so you have some control over how it is placed.  A box is better overall, but using a bag could be your backup plan.

I would advise against using Greyhound for long distance travel, as in returning home across the continent after the trip is completed.
