Lexington to Atlanta Touring help
« on: February 27, 2018, 01:35:17 pm »
Hi, I'm taking the trans-America East past Lexington, KY then heading South to Decatur, GA. Any suggested roads or routes would be appreciated. I prefer scenic, hilly/mountainous.
Thanks
Bill

Which Lexington?  Lexington, VA? Lexington, KY (closest "major" TA city is Berea)?

Ok.  I also thought you meant Decatur, AL.  :)   If you can get to Chattanooga, TN, you can take USBR-21 to Atlanta, then over on the bike paths to Decatur.

Actually, if you haven't done it, I would do the Blue Ridge Parkway.  From there, I have some routes, if you have a GPS, to get you to Atlanta.

http://www.trailsrus.com/biking/bluegrass.html this is a possible route to get you to Tennessee from near Lexington Ky. At one point in time I had mapped out a route through Tennessee in regards to extending USBR 21 through Tennesee and through Kentucky. I'm not sure if that project is still on going or not. At one point I did hear that if you arrive via bicycle at Cumberland Gap tunnel the employees there would ferry you through the tunnel. There is a group that wants USBR 21 to be located a little further east than the route shown in the link. As I recall it was more in line with the Boone trail or trace.

Find out all you can about the USBR 21 corridor and you should find a route to meet your needs.

I've seen a route from south of Nashville down to Chattanooga, but you'd probably want to leave the TransAm further west.  From Lexington you'd have to go SSW to hit Nashville, which is backtracking a bit.

Sticking to AC maps as much as possible, would you consider taking Great Rivers South/Underground Railroad to Nashville, or do you have friends or family in Lexington?

I am trying to head directly South after leaving the TAT near Berea, I like the route jbruced sent going thru and next to the Daniel Boone Forest--looks like good topography!
Thanks everyone for your input.
