Recumbents and TDA Routes

I haven't done an exhaustive search of the internet.  However, from what I've seen recumbent touring bikes can be used on most of the Adventure Cycling routes.  However, they don't work as well (if at all) on the routes of TDA Global Cycling.  It appears that America is the land of reasonably well paved roads, while the rest of the world (especially the TDA routes) require bikes that are lighter and better able to go on dirt and gravel for long periods of time.

Do you concur?  If not, what recumbent bikes would you recommend for a TDA tour (as opposed to an Adventure Cycling tour which would probably be fine for most touring recumbents).

Recumbents are not advised for technical offroad, but are quite capable of touring on reasonably well maintained dirt roads.  The shortfalls of the type are that you can't throw your weight around to maneuver around obstacles, and you can't stand if you're surprised by something that requires a sprint.  And no, they don't climb as well as a diamond frame or a crank forward, but they're not as bad as the ignorant kid in the bike shop told you they were.

There are good and bad diamond frame bikes for touring.  And there are good and bad recumbent bikes for touring.  Whichever you use, make sure it handles well when loaded, is truly comfortable, and can carry the amount of gear you're planning to take.  As for the recumbents, I'd stay away from high racers or low racers; stick to a tried and true LWB or SWB.  And definitely go to a dealer that handles a lot of recumbents - even if it means an out of town trip - and test ride them all day.

Do pursue the research, and kudos for not dismissing recumbents out of hand, like a lot of closed minds do.  Many of them make excellent touring bikes.
